This is a week of gigantic aliens, fantasy creatures and celebrities at the York Student Cinema. A great mixture of exciting films is on offer, from Gareth Edwards’ superb critically-acclaimed sci-fi thriller Monsters to Sofia Coppola’s strange and deeply moving tale Somewhere with the week concluding on the stunning oceans of Narnia in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
After a space probe crash-landed in Mexico, strange and huge highly alien dangerous creatures have begun to develop across the area now known as the “infected zone” established by the US military to contain them. Across this, a photographer (Scoot McNairy) must escort his boss’s daughter (Whitney Able) and face the dangers that lurk there in the eerie deserted wilderness. In a strange, unsettling, deeply moving and intelligent film, our two leads learn uncover the realities of the life and learn about to better understand themselves and each other.
The film that beat Black Swan to the Golden Lion for Best Picture at the Venice Film Festival, and been hailed as a brilliant return to form Lost in Translation director Sofia Coppola, Somewhere follows the life of a famous actor (Stephen Dorff) recuperating at the Chateau Marmont in California whilst looking after his young daughter (Elle Fanning). What results is this strange, genuinely touching, and intelligent drama quite unlike almost any other film released last few years.
Based on C.S. Lewis’s acclaimed novel that sees the children return to the spectacular world of Narnia, a place filled with strange creatures, magic and excitement. They take to the oceans on a quest to find the legendary lost lords to save Narnia from an oncoming and seemingly unstoppable evil. Featuring a superb cast including Ben Barnes, Liam Neeson and Simon Pegg this is undoubtedly a vastly impressive seafaring fantasy adventure.
