The week in film

Wolfgang Peterson
Friday, 25th February 2011
  • Film news

- Another alien-related sci-fi flick is on the horizon; Paramount will reportedly be adapting John Scalzi’s novel Old Man’s War into a feature film with Wolfgang Peterson directing. Peterson’s most recent project was Poseidon (2006), but he is probably best known for directing the classic Das Boot (1981).

- The latest in a slew of recent remake announcements is that Warner Bros. are developing a remake of the Kevin Costner-starring 1992 romantic thriller The Bodyguard. The film will apparently take advantage of developments in social networking to drive its updated story.

- Ben Schwartz has been hired by Paramount to write a remake of the 1991 comedy Soapdish. It would presumably have the same set up as the original, which took place behind the scenes of a soap opera.

- More remake news comes in the form of the announcement that Chris Columbus, best known for directing the first two Harry Potter films, will helm a remake of the Korean film Hello Ghost (2010).

- The cast of Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi hit Inception (2010) are all reportedly signed up for potential sequels. Nolan currently has his hands full with comic book sequel The Dark Knight Rises, but he has not denied the possibility of a sequel to Inception.

Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

  • Films on TV

Classic romantic comedy Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936) is on BBC2 at 1:10pm on Saturday, showing later that day is sci-fi classic Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983), which is on ITV1 at 3:30pm. Saturday evening brings another classic in the form of sports drama Field of Dreams (1989), which is on ITV4 at 5:50pm. Steven Spielberg’s thoughtful comedy The Terminal (2004) is on BBC2 at 5:55pm on Sunday and David Fincher’s cult classic Fight Club (1999) is on Film4 at 11:05pm on Tuesday.

I Am Number Four

  • New Releases

- I Am Number Four

Based on the novel by Pittacus Lore, the movie follows Number Four (Alex Pettyfer) defending himself and the girl he loves from a deadly enemy. It’s a film designed to mix Twilight-style romance with the pyrotechnics and subtlety of producer Michael Bay. Unsurprisingly, many critics have pointed out that it is not a match made in heaven.

- Animal Kingdom

A gritty Australian crime drama may not sound that interesting but having gained overwhelming critical acclaim and won the Sundance Film Festival, it’s probably worth a look. It follows Josh, a teenager fighting to escape and survive his violent family and the chaos around them with explosive results.

- Drive Angry 3D

Nicholas Cage breaks out of hell to rescue his granddaughter from satanists in this ridiculous over-the-top action adventure that predictably features a lot of sex, violence and cars and has more surprisingly managed mixed reviews.

West is West

- West is West

In this belated sequel to East is East, patriarch George Khan (Om Puri) finds his son’s lack of interest in his heritage disheartening so sends him to Pakistan to learn more about it. Perhaps an interesting premise, but the lack of reviews is never a good sign and those published aren’t exactly glowing.

- The Rite

A horror starring Anthony Hopkins as old exorcist teaching young priest (Colin O’Donoghue) how to expel demons. According to most critics, it fails to convince and it is not scary at all.

- No Strings Attached

Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher seem unable to manage proper relationships so ‘decide to use each other for sex,’ but, this being a Rom-Com, there are no prizes for guessing what happens next. Apparently, it’s neither particularly good or bad, having garnered relatively mixed reviews.
