News

  • The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 has broken a silly amount of box office records. Widening the gap between the critics and the punters, the fourth instalment in the teenage phenomenon grossed $138.1 million in America over the weekend. Here in the UK, it opened with almost £14 million, making it the highest opening for an American film.
  • Star Trek 2 now has an official opening date: it will be landing on May 17th 2013. JJ Abrams returns to the directors chair, and shooting is due to start in January. Prepare to shell out an extra few quid too – you'll be able to see the Enterprise, Vulcans and lens flare in glorious 3D.
  • Lots of rumours surrounding who's going to be recording the theme tune to the new James Bond film, Skyfall. Previous contenders include Kings of Leon and Adele, but you can rule Noel Gallagher out: he flatly denied his involvement in the project this week. Whoever it is, at least the title Skyfall should be easy to incoporate into the song – good luck doing that with Quantam of Solace and Casino Royale.
  • Scarlett Johananson is making the move from front of the camera to behind it – the star intends to adapt Truman Capote's Summer Crossing. At least this'll keep her from releasing another Tom Waits cover album.

New Releases

  • 50/50

A Seth Rogen comedy that's aiming for the higher-brow market thanks to co-star Joeseph Gordon Levitt. Levitt is diagnosed with cancer and Rogen helps him with his struggles. It's not the most conventional grounds for a comedy, but it's been well received in the States, and there's even some Oscar buzz surrounding it.

  • Moneyball

An economics buff played by Jonah Hill devises a formula for testing the value of baseball players, prompting a manager (Brad Pitt) to take him under his wing. It's written by The West Wing scribe Aaron Sorkin, so expect witty and fast paced dialogue. Don't let the baseball backdrop put you off – if the reviews are to be believed, this is one of the films of the year.

  • My Week With Marilyn

Another prestigious film with Oscar hopes. It focuses on Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), a young assistant director working on The Prince And The Showgirl starring Marylin Monroe (Michelle Williams) and Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh). Emma Watson, Judi Dench and Dominic Cooper round out the impressive British cast.
