Brownies
Sunday, 8th February 2009
For every year I have spent at university, my birthday has been marked by a very special delivery.

Without fail, with a couple of days to go until my special day, a big, brown parcel with my name on it arrives at the house. And each year I know that inside the cardboard box will be something that is too delicious to leave unopened. So prematurely, but oh so forgivably, I rip open the packaging and delight at what is inside.

I am talking about the lovely mail order bakery, Meg Rivers, which, to my joy, my parents are in the habit of taking advantage of around my birthday. Meg Rivers is an award winning, family run business with impeccable standards. It is committed to using the best ingredients possible to produce wholesome, authentic food that is all finished and decorated by hand.

Meg Rivers only uses natural ingredients and cakes are made in small batches, ensuring freshness when delivered straight to your door. Packages are wrapped prettily in white cake boxes and tied up with ribbon, with the opportunity to include a personal message.

After two years of receiving the aptly titled “Starving Student” box, which contains a satisfying forty-four portions of brownie, bakewell, flapjack and shortbread, I wondered with great anticipation what the box would contain this year.

To my joy, turning 21 seems to have its rewards, as my parents treated me to one of Meg River’s Celebration Cakes. The cake they chose to send was a rich chocolate cake made with free-range eggs and Belgian chocolate. It was dense and very chocolaty: ideal for true chocolate fanatics.

If chocolate isn’t what you fancy, there are two alternative Celebration Cakes: a rich fruit cake or a classic Victoria sponge, each iced by hand with a personal message. Celebration Cakes will set you back £42.95, which is expensive for students; so if you have a special occasion coming up, by all means, encourage family or friends to treat you!

If you are tempted by the idea of sending your loved one a package of freshly baked goodies, you may be interested in the following. This Valentine’s Day, Meg Rivers has given its classic chocolate brownie recipe a twist by fashioning its gooey brownie mixture into irresistible heart shapes. More affordable than sending a cake, this gift includes two generous sized brownies for £9.99.

There is a further charge of £4.99 for post and packaging which includes attractive gift wrapping, comprised of confetti hearts, white cake box and pink ribbon, plus your own personal Valentine’s message. Last orders must be placed before 10am on Thursday February 12th.
