Summer barbecue

Barbecue
Monday, 27th April 2009
Summer is finally here! Take advantage of the sun, or what little there is of it, with our suggestions for a sizzling hot barbecue.
  • Whilst some lucky students may already have some form of barbecue equipment, disposable barbecues can be bought for very cheap prices online or at your local supermarket.
  • Try experimenting with various sauces and spices for marinating your meat and fish. If you like your food spicy, a good dose of Reggae Reggae Sauce or Nando's Peri-Peri marinade should come in handy. Slightly more interesting combinations include covering a small spoonful of coffee beans with steak, to create a coffee-pepper crust or pouring beer over meat to create a hearty flavour.
  • Cut down on costs by making burgers yourself with 500g of mince and a beaten egg. Using your hands, mix the two ingredients together and shape into small burger patties.
  • Try making chicken kebabs or satay by cutting a chicken breast into large pieces and skewering them. Indonesian satay sauce makes for a delicious, slightly nutty flavour.
  • Barbecues aren't just good for cooking hefty pieces of meat. Seafood tastes delicious when cooked on the grill, especially salmon or tuna steak. Smother salmon with soy sauce, honey and mustard to create a lovely teriyaki sauce covering.
  • Large mushrooms, peppers, courgettes or aubergines taste great when gently smoked on the grill. Stuff mushrooms with cheese for a filling appetizer, or sprinkle paprika and olive oil over the peppers for a spicy kick.

> If you live on campus, watch out for pathetic porters that have nothing better to do than bitch you out for using disposal barbecues!
