Six Nations Round Four Preview

Chris Ashton
Friday, 11th March 2011
The second-to-last week of the Six Nations sees Italy battle France at Stadio Flaminio and Wales take on Ireland at the Millennium stadium. Both matches taking place on Saturday. And then the biggest game of the weekend, for me at least, happens on Sunday when England take on Scotland at Twickenham.

The first game of the weekend is Italy v France, kicking off at 14:30. This should be an interesting game, highly dominated by the French side. After their close loss against England last weekend, France will be doing all they can to get a high point scoring game, as this could secure them the win in the long run.

Italy has been playing surprisingly well this year, so they may get a few points on the board again this weekend and playing at home could help them out a bit. Expect a strong performance from Mirco Bergamasco: as the strongest player on the team, there is rarely a moment when he has not got his head in the game.

Prediction – France Win

Also on Saturday we see Wales take on Ireland at the Millennium stadium, kick off at 17:00. Being tied in second place, this match means everything for both teams. Both Wales and Ireland have had a pretty strong season this year, beating both Scotland and Italy. It will be a close game this weekend as both teams are of a similar standard, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top. I can see this game relying heavily on kicking and maybe a few tries.

I think Wales will have the upper hand as the game is being played at their home stadium, and their strong wingers will hopefully manage to push through the defence.

Prediction – close game but Wales win

The final game of the weekend sees England take on Scotland. Scotland has had a surprisingly weak season this year, not winning a single game so far. The English team is looking on top form, especially after their win against France. This is the final game at Twickenham this year, so I think England will feel like they’ve got something to prove. Another win will be leading England one step closer to the grand slam.

Again keep an eye on the backs this weekend, Flood and Youngs will be giving an impressive performance as usual. Also, hopefully this weekend will be a big scoring weekend again for Chris Ashton; he didn’t do much against France, so he will be looking to get some more swallow dive tries.

Prediction – England win

And Italy throw a curveball into the mix! France now have no chance of winning the six nations! Congrats Italy
