Varsity Preview

22 Acres
Wednesday, 13th February 2008
York are favourites against our neighbours York St John in Varsity's fourth annual competition today.

Regardless of the Varsity vs Roses debate, every sportsperson who competes will be pumped for action and desperate for victory. Indeed, York are confident of retaining the crown, and the competitors will be keen to not only win, but humiliate their rivals.

The fixtures this year include everything from badminton to surfing, basketball to skiing. The addition of new sports could swing the balance slighty but York will still be favourites and having the home advantage means Jo Carter is extremely confident.

The competitions kick-off at midday in the sports centre main hall, in the tent, on 22 acres, on the tennis courts and on the astro-turf. Numerous events will be going on throughout the afternoon until 5:00pm, when the indoor cricket and staff 5-a-side football kick-off. Finally, there will be an awards ceremony in Goodricke.

Notable exceptions include the men's football 1st and 2nd teams (both fixtures have been cancelled due to BUSA knock-out cups) and the men's badminton firsts. The athletics club have rearranged their fixture until the following Wednesday. The lack of two football fixtures gives extra confidence to York because football is one of St John's better sports. Similarly, in netball a pre-Varsity friendly saw all three York teams beat St Johns, so the smart money is on York retaining the Varsity crown. The inclusion of what is essentially the Halifax college netball team as the 4ths may give St John's a better chance, but UYNC are still confident of four victories.

Missing fixtures and pointless rivalry aside, there's bound to be a great atmosphere, and students are encouraged to get down to the various venues and support their friends against our foes - even if it's just for the day.
