Badminton men's 2nds shuttled out of BUSA cup by cocky Manchester

Varsity Badminton
York were unbeaten until the Manchester tie
Sunday, 24th February 2008
York 3 - 5 Manchester

Wednesday 20th February saw the recently dominant York men's 2nds Badminton team lose their first BUSA match of the season 3-5 in a closely contested match against Manchester 3rds.

Written by Peter Parten

The statistics indicated it would be a close game: York had won all ten of their previous matches (six of which ended 8-0). Manchester likewise boasted a formidable record: A draw against Liverpool John Moore’s the only result to blemish a set of nine other victories for them in the league above. Thus, both teams had right to be cocky but only Manchester maintained their unbeaten run.

After a late start to the match, first blood went to Manchester: their Singles 1 beating Ed Chuck, York’s Singles 2, in a tight three end game. James Hor, York’s Singles 1, quickly levelled the scores in another thrilling three end game against Manchester’s Singles 2.

The first round of doubles games saw Manchester stamp their authority on the tie. A defeat for York’s Doubles 2 pairing, Matt Knight and Tom Ilett, 21-19, 21-19 was followed by York’s Doubles 1 pairing, Peter Parten and Tom Branson (c), losing 22-20, 16-21, 23-21 in the most closely fought contest of the fixture. The tie was far from over at 1-3 in Manchester’s favour, but two tight victories in this round of the doubles would ultimately prove telling in the final score.

Bridging the gap of a league proved too difficult for York on the day and Manchester ended 3-5 victors. They move into the next round where they will play Newcastle 2nds in a week’s time.
