College cup week 4 review

Alcuin football
Preston rallies his troops earlier in the season
Friday, 16th May 2008
After another exciting week of college football, the groups are starting to take shape and the pre-tournament favourites are coming to the fore. One of the favourites were Alcuin 1sts and they are living up to their billing by following their opening week victory against Halifax 1sts with another success against James 2nds.

Their game this week finished 2-0 but captain Myles Preston was a “little disappointed” with the performance. However, Preston is “pleased” with how Alcuin have started overall and was particularly happy with the display against Halifax 1sts, stating that he thought that Halifax were so strong that he “wouldn’t be surprised if the two met in the semis, if Alcuin 1sts get that far.”

Although not mathematically qualified, there would need to be a very strange set of results for Alcuin not to advance to the quarter-finals and Preston reflected this by saying that his team will still be “going for it” in their final fixture against Langwith 2nds. He also warned ominously that his team “haven’t played their best yet.”

Talking about the tournament as a whole, Preston echoed Goodricke captain Adam Lewis’ view that “anyone can beat anyone”, as well as singling out Derwent 1sts as dark horses for the tournament, singing the praises of captain Chris Barnett and how he was “very impressive.” On a side note, he stated his belief that the Langwith 1st team loss to Derwent 3rds was “the worst result in college history.”

Goodricke and Vanbrugh 1sts both kicked off their tournament this week with victories, Vanbrugh beating Derwent 2nds 3-0 and a solitary strike from Colin High was enough for Goodricke against Halifax 2nds.

Group 3 saw Wentwoth’s woes continue with another defeat to a 2nds team with Vanbrugh running out 1-0 victors. The other game in the group pitted Derwent 1sts against Alcuin 2nds where a late Alcuin come back was not enough to peg back an Anton Murphy first half brace as Derwent won 2-1.

The final action of the week had Langwith 1sts attempt to bounce back from last weeks humiliation by playing James 1sts. They showed only glimpses of bouncebackability before losing 2-1.

Next week gets into the 3rd round of matches with the clash of the week being Vanbrugh 1sts v Goodricke 1sts, with the winner more than likely topping the group. Halifax 1sts have to beat James 2nds to leave qualification in their own hands and Derwent 3rds look to build on their good debut in the tournament against Goodricke 2nds.

Can we get some more photos of college football?I'm tired of the same old Preston team talk,Eddie's arse and that one from the astro last year...

I never get bored of seeing that team talk - I believe that it was 1-1 at half time against Goodricke, and we went and won 3-1, which pretty much won us the league in the first term...

Worst result in college football history? Since when were you a Langwith fan, Preston?

Henry,

I don't mean any offense to your third team, but you must understand that from Langwith's point of view, that is a terrible result for them! Not only is it Derwent, but it's their third team!

This isn't taking anything away from your team though - having seen you guys in the qualifying tournament, I thought you lot were excellent and deserved winners, and think it would be excellent if you got through. It gives more credibility to college third teams who do have some good players in their teams.

On a side note - im not a Langwith fan at all!!! I was overjoyed by the result!!!

Matt Witherwick seems confident ahead of tomorrow's crunch game - and I quote 'I think we'll beat them'. However, a source close to Witherwick suggested to me that he said 'I would love it if we beat them'. Either way, he's confident ahead of tomorrow.

I fancy it to be a dull 0-0 draw, with neither team playing much 'football'.

Haha Myles you jest, we both know I said nothing of the sort. Stop misquoting me, I do not wish to be part of your web of lies and deceit! See you on the pitch.

ps. I hate Kevin Keegan.

Goodricke bottled it today - you can't afford to concede a 3-1 lead if you want to win the college cup...

3-3, typical Goodricke, couldn't deal with the pressure... especially that left back.

Myles your ability to judge the outcome of a game is quite something:

"I fancy it to be a dull 0-0 draw, with neither team playing much 'football'."

You couldn't have been more wrong!

Can't get it right all of the time I guess - my previous predictions (such as Alcuin winning the college league in both terms) have usually been bang on the money! Maybe it was my words that spurred both teams on!

  • 10 - I heard that Remi hit Buckley with a haymaker - any thoughts on this?

It was more of a jab, but all the same, it was out of place on the football field.

Rumours have it Remi will be an honourary guest at Vanbrugh's punch party.
