BUCs Review

Thursday, 11th December 2008
York suffered a mixed set of results in this Wednesday’s BUCs fixtures, with several sides’ disappointing results highlighting the recent lack of game time due to the poor weather. A number of York sides were on the losing side of very tightly contested affairs which on another day could have given the university a much stronger set of results.

Varsity Badminton
A good day for Badminton Men's 1sts

There was relative success for the racket sports, with the Men’s 1st team badminton claiming a resounding 8-0 victory against Sunderland Men’s 1sts and Men’s tennis 2nd team taking a 6-4 victory against Sheffield Men’s 2nds. The Women’s badminton 1st team also battled to a 4-4 draw against Huddersfield Women’s 1sts, unfortunately the Men’s badminton 2nd team couldn’t keep York unbeaten and succumbed to a convincing 8-0 defeat against a very talented Sheffield Hallam 2nd team.

It was a tough week for the hockey teams who failed to get any positive results against some very strong opposition. The Men’s 2nd team going down 2-0 to Sheffield Hallam’s 3rd team, the women’s 1sts losing 2-0 to Sheffield University’s 1st team and the Women’s 2nd team falling foul of a 3-0 defeat to Leeds University 5th team.

The footballers also enjoyed mixed fortunes in their first fixture in over two weeks. The 1st XI cruised to a 1-0 victory against a scrappy, ill disciplined Northumbria 4th team in a volatile match marred by sending offs and aggressive opposition. The 3rd XI were on the wrong side of an exciting see-saw result against Hull’s 5th team which saw York battle back from 3-1 down to 4-3 up only to lose 5-4. Men’s 1st team basketball held their nerve to win a very tightly contested varsity match against York St John’s 1st team 65-64.

Other Results:

Rugby Union Men’s 1sts LOST 28-29 Northumbria 1sts

Volleyball Men’s 1sts LOST 3-0 Sheffield Hallam 1sts

Volleyball Women’s 1sts WON 3-0 Sheffield Hallam 1sts

Netball 2nds LOST 48-15 Leeds University 2nds
