Gemma Johnson interview

Monday, 9th March 2009
All candidates have been given the same five questions and all answers quoted below are entirely verbatim without any editing or adjustment.

Gemma Johnson
Gemma Johnson outlines her stance

Why do you think you would be a good York Sport President?

I could say the standard stuff like being dedicated and committed but what makes me stand out is my people skills, I treat people as I wish to be treated myself and genuinely believe I can improve sport at York for not just clubs, but teams and individuals.

What experience would you bring to the role?

Press and Publicity for YUsnow (helped acquire a £750 sponsorship deal with the parish); Equestrian Team Captain last year (team was placed sixth nationally out of 54 teams)

YorkSport Tournament Secretary (Organising Roses, set to be biggest and best ever); President of the Riding Club (Went from £1000 in the red at the start of hand over to being able to afford to host a friendly comp for club members, without the increasing financial impact on club members) and I do a Management degree...

How do you think Alex Lacy has done this year? Would you have acted differently?

Jo Carter was well liked and super organised, but Alex has had some good ideas but hasn't executed them as well as he could have. Poor communication and a lack of consultation with clubs has been his downfall. I'm not in this to make my mark, just make sport at York bigger and better.

How do you intend to boost York’s sporting achievement next year?

Reduce membership to recruit more club members, increase the team selection pool and retain both club and team members. I've devised a three tier system which caters for all clubs. Just York Sport (Riding, Skiing etc), YS and Sports Centre (Volleyball, Trampolining) and YS + SC + reduced rate of gym membership... three options to entice more people. Employ a physio. Financially support those that excel where possible.

What is the most important issue that affects York Sport in the coming year?

Coming year... Communication. Media relations are excellent but direct conversations with clubs on issues that matter to them are infrequent and issues raised are often over looked. I would never dismiss a club due to their popularity or size, I want to help everyone get the best out of their time at York.

Voting is already underway at http://www.yusu.org/elections and runs until Friday.

Could you stop saying "I do a Management degree" as experience? Most of the people that I know who study management couldn't manage putting the alphabet in alphabetical order. It's really turning me off. Thanks.

I think Gemma is one of the leading candidates for this position. Fair amount of knowledge, good performance at Hustings and reasonable policies.

It also helps that she is very fit!

But she wasn't equestrian captain last year, that was Sophie Hudson - so can't be trusted...maybe the ideal candidate to replace Lacy

She lied at Hustings about helping to rganise the publicty for Roses as well. She hasn't been to a single Roses Publicity Committee meeting I'm told.

Could everyone settle down please?

Yes post #6, she hasn't been to any Roses Publicity Committee meeting I've been at, but outright abusing and name-calling the girl achieves nothing but sullying the elections ultimately.

Let's be more productive and have a discussion about her policies instead maybe??

#5, I was on the Equestrian B team last year and can confirm that Gemma was captain, and a bloody good one too! Sophie was the captain of the A team.

No takers on the whole 'let's discuss her policies rather than slagging her off' then I see!!

Bit late now, but I think £40 to use the Sport Centre amd all of its' facilites, including the gym, essentially for the entire year is quite reasonable (although having to pay £5 for College sport membership isn't on I think, as it can inhibit inclusion). However, yes, some of the facilities could do with being upgraded and more new and wide-ranging equipment needs to be brought in, particularly in the gym.

If elected, I particulary hope that Gemma sees her facilities policy through to the end, as well as doing something about college sport membership It does not cost £5 in administration to register each and very student who plays college sport as a sports player. Profit-making from students of the most dubious kind I think!
