Saturday, 9th May 2009
The Yorker reviews all the action from the first day of the Roses weekend.

Day 1 of the Roses weekend and the expectation is almost palpable, Lancaster have an early 8-0 lead and the whole of York university expects victories on home soil.

The day started well for York, asserting their dominance in the racket sports with strong showings in badminton, a clean sweep in tennis and a crushing 5-0 victory in squash. Ashley Clews-Jones starred for the Karate squad who recovered from early disappointment to win 3-1 and take all four points for York. The snowboarders and skiers of York also put in some great performances on the slopes to bring home yet more points for York.

The indoor hockey was a very close affair, Lancaster landed some early blows but York again proved their class in the 1st XI environment with a convincing 7-2 victory. Lancaster did have one victory, they won a very closely contested indoor Frisbee game 8-6. York struck back with an exceptional display in the equestrian events, yielding yet more points for the already bumper Friday total.

In the cricket York battled to a 4 wicket victory with Sean Martin returning impressive figures of 4/22 and T. Hudson dominated with the bat claiming a half century. With the 2nd team also winning on Thursday York’s cricketers have done the double on Lancaster and returned maximum points.

York Men’s rugby proved their dominance and maintained the momentum gained from their unbeaten season with a clean sweep in the 7s with the 1st team winning 24-10, the 2nds 22-5 and the 3rds 24-0. 1st team Captain Mike Callis was in buoyant mood after the games, naming Tom Bruggé as player of the tournament exclaiming "Tom Bruggé, what a man". The emphatic nature of the victories leaves York in good stead going in the 15s games on Saturday. York Women’s teams did not fare quite as well as their male counterparts with the 2nds losing 20-5; however a strong 24-10 victory for the 1sts added 2 vital points to York’s tally.

Friday proved to be extremely fruitful for York with several superb results, and with two more days of scintillating sport and iffy weather to come, Roses 09 is set to go from strength to strength.

York 66.5 - 14.5 Lancaster
