End of Season Review

Thursday, 12th July 2007
As the sporting year comes to a close, The Yorker talks to outgoing Athletic Union Vice-President Nick Hassey about his proudest moments and biggest regrets from his time in the role.

"I think my time as Vice-President went well: college sport continued to expand, it now has a major sponsor in place and for the first time it has no financial difficulties," said Hassey, rightly proud of what he has achieved. "On a personal level, the things I was most proud of were the swimming gala and the contact rugby tournament. There was a huge demand for both of these tournaments and to be honest it was a little embarrassing not having any swimming gala and only having a tag rugby tournament at York."

When asked if he had any regrets, Hassey said, "I was very disappointed not to have had time to organise a college sport day of fun, which would have been a really good way to get loads of people into college sport early on. I also didn't manage to try and get a decent alumni network for the AU. These were both fairly important policies of mine and not getting them done was very disappointing. I simply didn't have the time or the power to have a real crack at the alumni, but looking back I really should have done more to sort out the college sport fun day".

This time last year there were rumblings in campus publications that college sport was uncompetitive, which was shown by Goodricke's romp to the title. This year however, Goodricke and new champions Halifax were the centrepiece of a year-long tussle for top spot. Hassey is quick to defend the college competition, "It was quite nice to see a fifth different winner of the trophy in five years, proving that it's a really interesting competition".

Goodricke Sports Rep George Taylor said, "It's naive to suggest college sport is uncompetitive, or even lacking in quality. The one day tournaments have drawn some of top-class players at York in, and the standard has been really high."

Outgoing AU President Moore

Despite being consistently strong, Hassey's college - Derwent - have never won the college sport championship in his time at the university. "To leave without ever having won is honestly quite upsetting! I was absolutly gutted, I've put so much effort into college sport over the three years and it meant a huge amount to me. I really wanted to win it."

"I would really like to say thanks to all the Sports Reps, Natalie Cramp (Outgoing Referee's Co-ordinator), Tom Moore (Outgoing President) and especially Pete Glanville (Retiring Football and Tennis Coach)."
