Whether you’re a fresher just starting university or you’re a student in your final year, it’s never too late to get involved with a sports team. It’s a great way to make friends, stay fit and have fun. At the University of York, there are almost 60 sports to choose from, ranging from the traditional football and netball to the more unusual ultimate frisbee and pole exercise, so there is something for everyone! There are teams at college level for those who want a more relaxed approach but there are also university teams for more advanced players.

All college matches contribute to the Inter-College Sport Championship and the year end with Sports Day. Halifax College has won the trophy for the last the three years, so will they do it again this year or is it another college’s time to shine?

University teams represent York in the British University and College Sports (BUCS) league and their matches are played every Wednesday afternoon. The teams also compete in annual competitions: Roses, named after the historical battles between the houses of York and Lancaster, sees the two universities go head-to-head and Varsity gives York the chance to take on local rivals York St John.

Most clubs have a joining fee and there is also a York Sport Membership to pay for, but it is worth it for the fun and enjoyment being in a sports team brings. For more information on sports memberships, see here:

Not sure what sport to get involved with? Here is a list of what the university has to offer:

Aikido: this is a non-aggressive martial art designed for self-defence and controlling aggression without inflicting injury.

American Football: entering only their second year, this club welcomes beginners and veterans to a sport which combines strategy and physical play.

Archery: Archery: with an archery range accessible all year around, the archery club welcomes students of all abilities.

Athletics: UYAC: Athletics club offers a variety of terrains and distances for both competitive running and social jogging groups.

Basketball: the club has two Men’s teams and a Women’s team and players of all standards are welcome.

Ben Lairig: the university’s mountain walking club takes frequent day and weekend trips walking and scrambling and there is winter walking too.

Boat: the boathouse is on the River Ouse and the club has both male and female rowing teams at senior and novice levels.

Boxing: two weekly sessions give you the chance to box competitively or just to keep fit and meet new people.

Canoe: YUCC: kayaking at York is ideal as there are plenty of spots to kayak at, including white water rivers, sea and surf and playboating.

Canoe Polo: Canoepolo: played in either a pool or a stretch of flat water, two teams of five players compete in this contact sport, where fast pace and positioning are key.

Capoeira: Capoeira: this is a Brazilian martial art which combines music, martial arts and acrobatics.

Cave and Pothole: Cave and Pothole: the club meets every Thursday and goes caving every weekend, giving you the chance to explore giant caverns and abseil hundreds of metres underground.

Cheerleading (York Hornets): Cheerleading: in only its third year, this club enters regional and national competitions and performs at various events.

Clay Pigeon Shooting: Shooting: the club enters clay pigeon shooting competitions but also welcomes members who wish to shoot for fun.
