Russia to host 2018 FIFA World Cup

Russia 2018
Thursday, 2nd December 2010
Russia has won the right to stage the 2018 World Cup, it was announced a few minutes ago. The news comes as a massive blow to the England bid, which was eliminated in the first round of votes. Qatar also had reason to celebrate, as it will host the 2022 competition.

Sepp Blatter has long been known to favour the Russian bid, citing the opening of new markets as the principal reasons for his approval. Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko said: "We can promise you a World Cup you will never forget. Let us make history together."

Despite a total cost of £15 million, and the best efforts of David Beckham, David Cameron and Prince William, the English bid was deemed inferior even to the Netherlands/Belgium proposal - the countries many saw as by far the least likely to secure votes. The nature of the English defeat will no doubt raise the question about the BBC Panorama documentary, aired on Monday, which alleged that several FIFA officials had taken bribes and kick-backs in exchange for World Cup votes.

The inquest into England's spectacular failure will unfold over the coming weeks, but it is suffice to say that today's events reflect the deep resentment towards English football culture felt by many FIFA officials.
