Australian Open: round three

rafael nadal
#1 Rafael Nadal
Sunday, 23rd January 2011
The players took to the courts again, this time battling for their place in the fourth round, and second week, of the Australian Open.

Top men's seed Nadal faced unseeded Tomic and won in three sets to book his place in the next round.

Second seed Federer also progressed impressively with a straight-sets win over Belgium’s Malisse. As current champion, no one is placing more pressure on him to reach the final than himself.

Djokovic’s time on court against fellow Serbian Troicki was brief, as his opponent retired injured after Djokovic took the first set 6-2.

Murray’s 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over Garcia-Lopez means he is through to the fourth round of the Open without having dropped a set yet.

After losing his first set to Haase and narrowly winning the second on a tie-breaker, Roddick turned the match and secured his place in the next round with two impressive 6-2 sets.

There were also wins for sixth seed Berdych, who overcame Gasquet, Almagro, who defeated Ljubicic, and Cilic, who triumphed 9-7 in the final set against Isner.

Unseeded Robredo is through to the next round after winning in four sets against Stakhovsky. He is joined by Dolgopolov and Raonic, who defeated Tsonga (13) and Youzhny (10) respectfully.

In the women’s draw, top seed Wozniacki dismissed Cibulkova in two sets and second seed Zvonareva also progressed to the fourth round, defeating Safarova.

There were wins for seeds Clijsters, Sharapova and Schiavone. Clijsters and Sharapova both won in two sets but Schiavone’s match lasted four hours 44 minutes as the final set went to 16-14, making it the longest women’s match in Grand Slam history.

Numerous surprise victories came as top seeds fell: 11th seed Henin lost closely 6-4, 7-6 to Kuznetsova and Petrova, seeded 13th lost to unseeded Makarova.

Fourth seed Venus Williams retired after one game, giving her opponent, 30th seed Petkovic, a place in the next round.

16th seed Pavlyuchenkova failed to overcome her opponent, unseeded Benesova, as did fifth seed Stosur against Kvitova (25) and Peer, seeded tenth, against Pennetta (22), vastly reducing the number of high seeds in the fourth round.
