My York Sport Experience – Cricket and UYCC

york sport
Friday, 9th September 2011
My York Sport experience started with a net session at a UYCC (University of York Cricket Club) training session last October. I’d always been a cricketer, played at a club back home, but to be honest I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I rocked up at the Sports Centre as one of those nervous freshers who didn’t want to put a foot wrong and make a fool out of themselves!

Two things became apparent about UYCC very quickly. Number one; there were some very good cricketers training at those nets. But, the more important aspect was that didn’t actually matter. With UYCC, everyone had a place whether you were the best cricketer on campus or some average Joe like me who just wanted to enjoy the game at my own level. The lads were a good set, and to be honest I guess it’s probably like that with most clubs at York. There was a sense of belonging that didn’t come from my college or my course, and that was one of the most rewarding things about playing cricket last year.

When the season started, I was picked to play in the 3rd team, and in our first game we were heavily beaten by Leeds TASC which was very disappointing. After two terms of training it was nice to finally get the season underway, but it was hardly the best start! However, the following game turned out very differently and we beat Sheffield Hallam comprehensively. I was asked to captain the side for this game, and that was probably my proudest first year moment, especially as we won the match. It meant an awful lot to be able to say that I had captained my university at something, albeit if it only came in a cricket 3rds game.

That’s what university sport gives you, moments to remember (and possibly ones that you don’t remember as well!). The social side of sport at York is brilliant, and perhaps regrettably, it was something that I shied away from a little bit last year. However, some of the best nights out and moments from the year came with the lads from UYCC, and that’s the other massive positive that comes from getting involved with sport. Mates, laughs and a great social scene.

2011 proved to be an excellent year for UYCC in general. The 1st XI remained unbeaten in the league and reached the final of the Conference Cup, and the 2nd team narrowly missed out on promotion from their division, hopefully that will come next year. We have to look to be better next year, but hopefully by building on last year’s successes, more good York Sport experiences will come in the very near future for York’s cricketers.

Anyone interested in joining UYCC next year, look out for advertising about training or find us at Fresher’s Fair.
