Injury means heavy loss for womens 2nds

Women's Hockey
Wednesday, 12th December 2007
  • Hull 2nds 7
  • York 2nds 0

A strong Hull home side came out to defeat the York womens 2nd team 7-0 thanks to an injury-stricken end to what has been a very successful term.

This being the last game for many 2nd team third years York were hoping to pull a win out of the bag to complete their run of wins this season. The running was always against York, however, with two members of defence, a key player in midfield and a striker all missing from the team.

The first half started brightly with equal pressure from both sides, Lucy Horrell, out of position in Centre Midfield, and Emily Nicholson proving their worth. However, Hull pulled away and scored a lucky goal 10 minutes into the half to put added pressure on York.

This continued throughtout the first half. Lucky breakaway attacks by Hull, from what was an upbeat and determined performance in midfield by York, meant another two goals were scored in quick succession.

The second half again started brightly with the York defence ready to block any Hull attempt on goal. Lizzie Hollins, stepping in as Central Defender due to injury, blocked some Hull attacks but it wasn't enough. Hull scored again 10 minutes into the second half thanks to a loss of concentration at the back.

The standard of the second half was much higher on York's behalf even though more goals went against them. Milly Williams had an outstanding game, often free on the wing and making many runs down the sideline.

It was a frustrating day for York who had performed so well throughout the term.

Disappointment coursed throughout the team when the final whistle blew, with the score not totally reflecting the effort the whole team had put in.

The 2nds await Presidents weekend and Roses with anticipation.
