Every goal counts

  • Bradford 4

With three teams looking likely to be tied for the second BUSA spot come the end of the season, it was imperative for York to put out a strong scoring display against a bottom of the table Bradford side.

Their determination was evident from the first whistle, with all players putting in maximum effort to not only win the game but also achieve a scoring margin which exceeded that of their top table competitors. Whilst the technical gulf in standards meant that at times the game was monotonous, the York side kept clear sight of their aim – to increase their goal difference.

This was achieved by focus all the way down the court to capitalise on the frequent Bradford errors. Despite the ball hardly entering York’s defensive third, Goal Keeper Tess Olsen and Goal Defence Hannah Martin made some valuable interceptions and supported the attacking play up the court to quickly deliver the ball to the shooters. Playing out of her usual position as Centre, the fitness of Clare Shaw was evident as she maintained the momentum of the attack and dominated the centre court with countless interceptions.

Player of the match went to fresher Sami Briggs, who has slotted in well to the team and shows continual improvement at Goal Shooter. She moved well and supplied the Goal Attack with sharp balls across the circle which were converted with ease, taking the total of goals scored to above that of any other side in this fixture.

Earning this vital goal difference of 52 keeps York in contention for second place in their league, with another big win needed against Teesside 2nds at the start of next term.
