ODN: Dr Horrible's Sing-along Blog - Drama Barn - 30/11/09

ODN: Dr Horrible - Drama barn - 30/11/09
Tuesday, 1st December 2009
Written by Georgina Brown

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog is renown as something of an online sensation so the full house at the Drama Barn should not have been a surprise. It’s a tragi-comedy musical, telling the story of a complicated love triangle between the sensitive super-villain, Doctor Horrible, his nemesis Captain Hammer and their mutual love interest, an ordinary girl called Penny.

The director Stuart Hall chose his cast well, resulting in a performance to be proud of. Tom Crowley as the protagonist, Dr. Horrible gave a very impressive performance with excellent comic timing and obviously a confident knowledge of the script, constantly giving his all as the evil super-villain. His singing voice was ideal for the part with a good lower register and the expression he filled the words with meant that the story did not go awry. The same can be said for Ed Lewis-Smith as Captain Hammer, especially in regard to his duet with Penny (Nicky Johnston) as they proved they work very well singing as a couple. Ed’s Lewis-Smith must be given a special mention because of the dignity with which he responded to the heckling of the audience, never once straying from his persona of Captain Hammer.

The cast as a whole gave a high-energy performance and responded very professionally, never once corpsing even when they were forced to ad. Lib. The American accents were generally consistent, especially Greg Ebdon’s as Moist. He gave an all round good performance and did not give in to the temptation of over-acting his character of the Doctor’s damp sidekick. The supporting cast helped keep the fast-pace of the show and gave enthusiastic perfomances.

My only criticism would go to the audience, not all of whom turned their phones off causing feedback on the sound system. Otherwise, all in all, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-along Blog provided a very entertaining evening and the standard of performance was high.
