'So You Think You Can Dance' Blog

SYTYCD

Presented by Cat Deeley, the BBC’s So You Think You Can Dance is the competition for one lucky dancer to walk off with £100,000 and the chance to dance on So You Think You Can Dance in Hollywood. In the first two rounds dancing partners were paired up by the production team and the public voted on their favourite couple. Now in round 3, the dancers switch partners each week and the public decide on their individual favourite dancer.

Partners are allocated via a random draw and the couple must then select a style of dance picked out of a hat. Co-producer and head judge Nigel Lythgoe along with former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips, choreographer Sisco Gomez and Louise Redknapp offer their comments and expertise. The two boys and two girls with the lowest public votes then go head-to-head with their solo routines and the judges eliminate one boy and one girl based on their overall performance.

This week Lizzie and Drew opened the show. As she showed in her solo, Lizzie’s natural flair is hip-hop but her versatility makes her one of my present favourites in the competition. Their disco dance to 'Disco Inferno' by The Trammps was a high energy dance showing loads of character. Drew’s flawless technical capabilities were epitomised in his solo and in the boys’ group routine by his incalculable pirouettes; that alongside his acrobatic ability makes him a strong contender.

The next couple, Mandy and Mark, danced a contemporary piece but though this is Mandy’s forté, she failed to shine. Although Mark approached the dance with his usual enthusiasm, his flexed feet gave him quite an animalistic, somewhat ‘creature of the night-like’ approach to the style. After demonstrating amazing strength in his balletic solo routine, performing a backwards fish-roll then pressing-up into a handstand, Alistair and his partner Hayley performed a hip-hop routine lacking sharpness and precision...but the use of ‘Heelys’ was a clever input and did make the weakest routine of the night a little more entertaining.

In her element, Yanet performed a sassy Salsa dance with partner Tommy but the performance of the night really had to be Robbie and Charlie’s lyrical dance to 'This Woman’s Work' by Maxwell. The routine was choreographed by Tyce Diorio, who has choreographed on the US version of the show. The routine portrays the difficulties of dealing with cancer in a moving and dramatic performance that had the judges in tears. At present, Diorio is set to star in a film called Move with SYTYCD’s very own Nigel Lythgoe and double Emmy award winner Wade Robson who has worked with the likes of Michael Jackson and Britney Spears.

Tommy and Mark were in the bottom four this week along with Hayley and Mandy. In the end, Tommy’s technical training outweighed Mark’s raw ability and Nigel declared that it was Hayley to leave the competition saying “I guess you exposed some weaknesses”.
