'American Idol' - meet the top 12!

American Idol
Tuesday, 16th March 2010

As I’ve written before, I’m a huge American Idol fan and the show has now reached the finalists’ stage: big band, big stage and BIG audience. In other words, it’s on. Missed out? Here’s my round-up of the top 12 to fill in your blanks – now you have no excuse not to watch.

  • Crystal Bowersox: ‘The Rebel’
    Crystal Bowersox AI9

‘MamaSox’ is the one to beat. Rocking some awesome dreads and busting out her harmonica, she has been ripening every week, her last performance being a sizzling ‘Give Me One Reason’. She could do with a little less judge pimping though, since her remarkable talent can speak for itself. Rating: 9/10

  • Siobhan Magnus: ‘The Oddball’
    Siobhan Magnus AI9

Quirkier than odd socks, Siobhan is the definition of ‘dark horse’. Having received little-to-no screen time before the live shows, she blasted onto the scene with a haunting ‘House of the Rising Sun’ and a delicious ‘Think’. Sure, when she speaks she sounds like she’s on depressants, but so what? Rating: 8/10

  • Casey James: ‘The Southerner’
    Casey James AI9

Carrying the swagger of a Southern Rock/Country artist, Casey expertly manoeuvred the electric guitar and has the perfect twang to find himself a niche in the American music market. His biggest threat though could be the accusation of being a bit of a soundalike. Rating: 8/10

  • Didi Benami: ‘The Shy Musician’
    Didi Benami AI9

The adorable guitar-strumming Didi had a rough few weeks in the semi-finals, inexplicably mauled by the judges for her more than adequate take on ‘Lean on Me’. Having one of the most unique voices, she needs to ensure consistently wise song choices to stay for the many weeks. Rating: 7/10

  • Andrew Garcia: ‘The Ex Front-Runner’
    Andrew Garcia AI9

The bookies’ early front-runner rapidly lost steam in the semi-finals failing to live up to his Hollywood Week acoustic cover of Paula Abdul’s ‘Straight Up’. But I’d still give the guy a chance – he’s packing a lot of talent and with a boost of confidence could return as a serious contender. Rating: 7/10

  • Lee Dewyze: ‘The Rocker’
    Lee Dewyze

A talented musician, Lee has boasted some of the better song choices so far. But his vocal grit lends him to being compared to finalists past Chris Daughtry and David Cook, whom he unfortunately pales in comparison to – particularly with his dodgy ratio of wonky notes to good ones. Rating: 6/10

  • Michael Lynche: ‘The Teddy Bear’
    Michael Lynche AI9

‘Big Mike’ has managed to be the most consistent performer – nonetheless, dude has been unnecessarily praised at times, inducing standing ovations and tears (?!) from the judges. He may indeed be gifted with a velvet voice, but he would struggle to find a place in the music industry. Rating: 6/10

  • Lacey Brown: ‘The One Not Suited For This Show’
    Lacey Brown

Though possessing a cute little instrument of a voice, Lacey has had a lot of stick for not being able to cut it on the Idol stage, something that’s surely only going to get worse with Idol ‘Bandzilla’ this week. Though likeable, she won’t make it far. Rating: 4/10

  • Tim Urban: ‘The Pretty Boy’
    Tim Urban AI9

Recently released topless photos will have won him a few votes. And while die-hard Idol fans are doing all but calling him the Antichrist, methinks he’s not all that good, but not all that bad either. ‘Meh’ seems the appropriate term. Rating: 4/10

  • Aaron Kelly: ‘The Puppy’
    Aaron Kelly AI9

Adorable finalist who certainly appears a few years shy of his age, 16. While the critique “good for his age” is certainly apt, “good enough for the talent pool of Idol finalists” may be stretching it a bit. Tween fans and ‘soccer moms’ could keep him up for a few weeks. Rating: 3/10

  • Katie Stevens: ‘The Precocious Teenager’
    Katie Stevens

Filling this season’s slot of the ‘robotic teen’, Katie has frequently sung off-key, yet miraculously made it this far. While this survival has most likely been due to her grandmother-loving back-story, she’s unlikely to make it further than top 9. Rating: 2/10

  • Paige Miles: ‘The Token Black Diva’
    Paige Miles

Arguably the weakest finalist of the 12, she delivered three poor performances back to back. This included a quivering ‘Smile’ which she excused to feeling emotional about Michael Jackson’s death when she sang it. Puh-lease. Rating: 1/10

my top choices are Lee, Andrew Garcia and Didi Benami for sure!

I'm gonna have to favour Siobhan over Crystal, can't see many people voting for the dreads. Plus, Siobhan is adorable.

I should probably add a note to the ratings; they're intended to be objective as to what potential the person has to last in the competition. But personally, my top 6 would probably be Siobhan, Crystal, Didi, Andrew, Casey and Lee. Possibly in that order, though that could change.
