The Week in TV

Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Saturday, 27th November 2010
  • News

- In the most disappointing news of the past week, Warner Bros. have decided to go ahead with rebooting Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a feature film without the involvement of Joss Whedon. One of the producers, Charles Roven, has said that “there is an active fan base eagerly awaiting this character’s return to the big screen.” I hope I speak for the majority of Buffy fans when I say that the only thing I’d be “eagerly awaiting” would be a project with guidance from Joss Whedon, the visionary creator of the cult series, not something so obviously tailored for the Twilight generation!

- Carlton Cuse (one of the executive producers of Lost) will be working on a new show set in Virginia during the Civil War. There are very few details known at this point, although it has been announced that it will be an ‘event’ series. (In other slightly Lost-related news, Jorge Garcia [who played Hurley on the six-year long mystery show] has been cast on J.J Abrams’ next big project, Alcatraz)

Royle Family

- Following the success of last year’s ‘The Golden Eggcup’, details of this year’s Royle Family Christmas special have been revealed. The episode, entitled ‘Joe’s Crackers’, will star writers Caroline Aherne and David Cash, as well as Ricky Tomlinson, Sue Johnston, and a return to the programme from Ralf Little and Jessica Hynes.

- A trailer for the fourth series of Primeval, which returns to our screens early next year, has been released. The trailer shows a first look at new cast members Ciaran McMenamin and Ruth Kearney, who will play Matt and Jess.

- Dougray Scott has been added to the cast of United, a BBC2 drama starring David Tennant about the famous Manchester United team known as the Busby Babes – Scott will play Sir Matt Busby.

- Good news for Poirot fans who’ve been longing to see David Suchet take on the Belgian detective’s most famous case. The long-awaited adaptation of Murder on the Orient Express will be airing over the Christmas period, and will star (among countless others, undoubtedly) Eileen Atkins, Hugh Bonneville and David Morrissey.

Hellcats

- FX have announced that they will be airing both Arrested Development and The Wire from the beginning next year. Much-loved comedy Arrested Development will reappear on their schedules in February and The Wire, which is one of the most critically acclaimed crime dramas ever, will begin airing again in March.

- MTV have announced that US competitive cheerleading drama Hellcats, which stars Alyson Michalka and Ashley Tisdale, will begin airing in the UK from this February.

  • Upcoming Highlights
    Sherlock

- There is a very welcome repeat from this Sunday at 7.30pm of the one of the biggest TV hits of the summer, BBC drama Sherlock. If you didn’t see it first time round, make sure to catch it now.

- Unknown comedian and impressionist Morgana Robinson is thrown in at the deep end as her new sketch show starts on Channel 4 this week. See The Morgana Show on Tuesday at 10.35pm.

- On Wednesday at 10pm on BBC4, the fourth season of Mad Men will come to an end, with its much-praised finale, ‘Tomorrowland.’

- If you’ve been thinking that Michael McIntyre has been relatively absent on TV in recent months, think so no longer – Michael McIntyre: Hello Wembley is on this Friday at 9pm on BBC1.

This Buffy news is nothing short of criminal. It probably won't bear much relation to the series, which is sad given how good it would be to see the cast back together again. Sad news indeed...

But I guess it's good news about that post-modern moustache icon, Poirot. Thank God they finally got around to it.
