The Week in TV

Doctor Who Christmas Special
Saturday, 4th December 2010
  • News

- As the holiday period approaches and the Radio Times have released their bumper two-week festive edition, things are starting to gear up for Christmas TV. The BBC have released a showreel containing many of their festive highlights, and more details are coming to light about Christmas schedules. We’ll have more details in the coming weeks, but all you really need to know for now is that this year’s Doctor Who special, ‘A Christmas Carol’, will air at 6pm on 25th December. You can plan your Christmas Day accordingly.

- Eliza Dushku will be returning to TV in a new pilot for TNT entitled Bird Dog. The series will follow Dushku as Gail McGrath, a police officer who has to partner with her estranged cop father.

- If you were wondering what’s next for Steve Carell after he leaves The Office at the end of this year then wonder no more. In a move to writing, he has sold a workplace sitcom project to NBC that is inspired by his early days when he worked as a mail carrier.

- It looks like everybody’s favourite serial killer will be sticking around on our TV screens, as Showtime have opted to renew the delightfully dark Dexter for a sixth season next year.

- The news that will surprise very few people has been confirmed: following the departure of Jason Manford, Matt Baker will be the new Monday to Thursday host of The One Show along with Alex Jones, while Chris Evans will continue to front the Friday show alongside the Welsh presenter.

- J.J. Abrams’ upcoming project Alcatraz has announced its star. Sarah Jones will play police officer Rebecca Madsen in the show which will, like most of Abrams’ shows, have a sci-fi element. Lost’s Jorge Garcia has already been announced as one of the show’s stars.

- The CW is potentially developing a spinoff for its hit series The Vampire Diaries, which airs on ITV2. Kevin Williamson has been asked to make a companion show that will follow researchers into paranormal activity and it could possibly even appear on the schedules for next year.

- Bones will be moving to a new position on Sky Living in the New Year and thankfully Matt LeBlanc’s return to TV, with new comedy Episodes, will be beginning on BBC2 in the first week of January, which is possibly before it airs in the US. Green Wing fans will be pleased to see that Episodes also features the reunion of Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig.

  • Upcoming Highlights

- Eighteenth Century legal drama Garrow’s Law concludes this Sunday at 9pm on BBC1. Will William and Sarah avoid ruin and find a way to be together?

- New American sketch comedy series Tim and Eric’s Awesome Show, Great Job! which features many celebrity cameos, will be starting on 4Music this Tuesday at 2.20am.

- FOX have released a movie-style trailer for next week’s game-changing episode of Fringe. If you’re not watching, tune in for Fringe on Tuesdays at 10pm on Sky1 - it’s worth it!

- Following the success of the celebrations for the Eastenders 25th Anniversary, it’s Coronation Street’s turn this week, as the soap celebrates 50 years of love, laughs, mystery and murder on the cobbles. And, in true Corrie style, the milestone is marked with a tram crash on Monday, with the aftermath of the disaster unfolding over the course of the week and climaxing in a 60-minute live episode at 8pm on Thursday. Even Dot Cotton is excited, apparently.

- And it’s with a very heavy heart that we bid farewell to Merlin this Saturday at 7.40pm on BBC1. As the pieces begin to fall into place and the characters move towards their destinies, a legendary sword and a rather specifically shaped table may just help to save Camelot.
