National Television Awards: who will win?

National Television Awards
Tuesday, 25th January 2011

The National Television Awards are now in their 16th year, and the best thing about them is that people have at least heard of the nominees, regardless of how questionable many of the programmes may be. The only thing that bothers me about this year’s awards is that nearly all of the nominees have been nominated before, with just 3 of the nominated programmes having begun in 2010, which made my job of predicting the winners slightly easier.

  • Talent Show: Britain’s Got Talent, Dancing on Ice, Strictly Come Dancing, The X Factor

- Prediction: Considering that X Factor has won over Strictly on all but one occasion, it will likely (and deservingly) do so again. The other two, as ever, will be ignored.

  • Comedy Programme: Benidorm, Harry Hill’s TV Burp, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Outnumbered

- Prediction: This is quite an open category, but my money would be on Harry Hill’s TV Burp, which may not be as fresh as it once was, but it’s still great fun, and watched by more people.

  • Drama: Doctor Who, Shameless, Sherlock, Waterloo Road

- Prediction: I’m struggling to write about this category when the best drama of last year, Being Human, didn’t even make the long list, but I am speaking as someone who was disappointed with both Sherlock and Doctor Who. Despite Sherlock providing strong competition, I think that Doctor Who will win.

  • Drama Performance: Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock), Philip Glenister (Ashes to Ashes), David Jason (A Touch of Frost), Matt Smith (Doctor Who)

- Prediction: If only for his name, Benedict Cumberbatch should win this award.

  • Digital Choice: Glee, Peter Andre: The Next Chapter, The Inbetweeners

- Prediction: Simply because its fans are as passionate as fans of Twilight (well, almost), Glee. I’m not even going to address the fact that a Peter Andre programme has been nominated for an award.

  • Factual Programme: Celebrity Masterchef, Junior Apprentice, Top Gear, Who Do You Think You Are?

- Prediction: The prediction of Top Gear has nothing to do with the fact that it has won the award three times in the past.

  • Serial Drama: Coronation Street, EastEnders, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks

- Prediction: The battle between Street and Enders will surely be one of the most interesting events of the night. Both have celebrated anniversaries in 2010, and have attracted super viewing figures in the last month, but the brilliance of Coronation Street’s 50th anniversary tram crash must surely put it above the shouting cockney programme.

Lacey Turner

  • Serial Drama Performance: Katherine Kelly (Coronation Street), Steve McFadden (EastEnders), Danny Miller (Emmerdale), Lacey Turner (EastEnders)

- Prediction: Seriously, has Lacey Turner ever been nominated for an award and not won it?

  • Topical Magazine Programme: BBC Breakfast, Loose Women, This Morning

- Prediction: A new award category, presumably because Loose Women winning last year’s award for Factual Programme is like the Daily Mail winning Best Labour Newspaper. Despite switching categories, Loose Women will likely take home this prize as it seems to have a loyal fan base.

  • Newcomer: Olga Fedori (Holby City), Paula Lane (Coronation Street), Ricky Norwood (EastEnders), Marc Silcock (Emmerdale)

- Prediction: Either Norwood or Lane will win this award, and voters will likely just vote for the person who is in their favourite soap. My prediction would be Norwood.

  • Entertainment Programme: Big Brother, I’m a Celebrity Get Me out of Here, Mock the Week, QI

- Prediction: Despite not being able to see where the entertainment comes from, I’m a Celebrity is almost dead cert to win, as it is watched by at least twice as many viewers as the others. More people have dated Ann Widdecome than watched the last series of Big Brother.

  • Entertainment Presenter: Ant and Dec, Davina McCall, Paul O’Grady, Dermot O’Leary

- Prediction: Having won the award for the last nine years, this year will more than likely be Ant and Dec’s tenth year of success. Just so long as Dermot O’Dreary doesn’t win, I’ll be happy.

Find out how many of these predictions are correct at the National Television Awards ceremony, broadcast tomorrow evening at 7.30 on ITV1.
