The week in TV

Hugh Bonneville
Saturday, 29th January 2011
  • News

- Ridiculously exciting news of all for fans of Doctor Who and charming British actors: the powers that be have seen sense and cast the endlessly delightful Hugh Bonneville (Notting Hill, Downton Abbey) in the sixth series of Doctor Who, reportedly as a bearded space pirate. My previous statement in this blog entry tells you all you need to know about my feelings on this matter.

Luke Pasqualino

- Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome, which will fill the void left by Caprica as SyFy’s next Battlestar Galactica prequel is beginning to form its cast. The young William Adama will be played by ex-Skins star Luke Pasqualino and the other role announced is that of Adama’s commanding officer, who’ll be played by Ben Cotton. It’s hard to know what to say about the choice for Adama other than that it’s rather unexpected/odd and Pasqualino will have to bulk up quite a lot!

- Will Ferrell is going to have a four-episode arc later on in this season of The Office. Ferrell will play a branch manager who arrives from the home office and turns out to be just as incompetent as Steve Carell’s Michael Scott.

- NBC have picked up Grimm. This pilot comes from Jim Kouf (Angel) and David Greenwalt (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and will be a “dark but fantastical cop drama about a world in which characters inspired by Grimm’s Fairy Tales exist.”

Charlie Sheen

- Production on Two and a Half Men has been halted as star Charlie Sheen has entered rehab. CBS released a statement stating that they “are profoundly concerned for his health and well-being, and support his decision.” The actor was rushed to hospital with “severe abdominal pains” on Thursday and earlier this month he reportedly went on a weekend-long bender with porn stars.

- HBO have ordered a pilot for an Aaron Sorkin project that will be about the backstage drama at a cable news network. Sorkin’s last workplace drama was NBC’s long-running and highly acclaimed show The West Wing.

- The remaining cast members for the Charlie Angels TV reboot have been announced as former Friday Night Lights star Minka Kelly and Transformers star Rachael Taylor.

- Following the announcement of This is England ’90 last month, director Shane Meadows has confirmed that he will also be making This is England ’88, a two-hour special focusing on Lol and Woody expected to air later this year.

- More cast members have been announced for this year’s Torchwood, which has now been given the subtitle of ‘Miracle Day.’ As well as Mekhi Phifer (ER) and Bill Pullman (Independence Day), John Barrowman, Eve Myles and Kai Owen will be joined by former Hollyoaks actress Lena Kaur, while William Thomas will reprise his role as Gwen’s father.

Marchlands

- It really is the end of an era this Wednesday at 8pm on ITV1, as John Nettles steps down from his role as Tom Barnaby in Midsommer Murders. Fear not, however, as there’s just time for Barnaby to solve one last case before he hands over the reins to his cousin John.

- Promising new supernatural drama Marchlands begins this Thursday at 9pm on ITV1. The premise - the death of a little girl has ramifications for three different families living in the same house at different times – is intriguing and the cast – including Alex Kingston, Jodie Whittaker, Anne Reid and Dean Andrews – is top-notch.

- Season 7 of Entourage arrives on Sky Atlantic on Thursday. The season premiere will air at 10.30pm.

- New comedy The Big C, which centres around Laura Linney as a suburban teacher who is diagnosed with cancer, begins on More4 at 11pm on Thursday.
