The week in TV

Charlie Sheen
Saturday, 26th February 2011
  • News

- Over the past week, a lot of drama has occurred surrounding Charlie Sheen and his show Two and a Half Men. After Sheen left rehab, he made a number of derogatory remarks about the sitcom’s creator Chuck Lorre (after Lorre had declared that “If Charlie Sheen outlives me, I’m gonna be really pissed”), calling him a “clown” and saying that his real name is “Haim Levine”. The most recent, and sort of inevitable, news is that production for this season of Two and a Half Men has been suspended.

- James Corden is to reprise his role as Craig in the next series of Doctor Who. The Gavin and Stacey star appeared in the series five’s surprisingly touching episode ‘The Lodger,’ although it’s not yet known if Daisy Haggard will return as his love interest Sophie.

Zen

- The BBC have decided to axe Italian-set crime drama Zen. The first series of the programme, which starred Rufus Sewell, received mixed reviews and its ratings fell over the three episodes. However, Zen’s production company are in talks with other broadcasters about continuing the series.

- US cable network FX have given the green light to a pilot entitled Powers. The project is based on the popular comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, and it centres around homicide detectives investigating cases involving superheroes. Charles Eglee (The Walking Dead, The Shield) wrote the pilot and will serve as an executive producer for the series.

- After almost 50 years of alternating broadcasts with the BBC, ITV have won the sole rights to show The Royal Variety Performance for the next 10 years.

Firefly cast

- Fans of Joss Whedon’s outstanding (and unfortunately short-lived) series Firefly have launched the ‘Help Nathan Fillion Buy Firefly’ movement after the actor said (in an interview with Entertainment Weekly), that if he got $300 million from the California Lottery, he’d buy the rights to Firefly, make it on his own, and distribute it on the Internet.
