Many people frequently forget it, but Heroes Season 1 was pretty superb television. It had both critical-acclaim and widespread appeal, not to mention that it was creating discussions in which it was even compared to Lost. It wasn’t just that there’s something inherently interesting about origin stories, the first season of Heroes was well-written and had a strong ensemble cast with interesting characters across the board. The show’s pilot was gripping and watching Peter, Claire, Hiro and the others come to learn of their abilities and figure out their position within the world was truly captivating stuff.
I have already stated that I think things began going downhill in Season 2, but the Season 1 finale displays many of the reasons why Heroes became a show that should have been cancelled before it was. The disappointing finale both highlighted the flaws of Heroes and didn’t provide satisfying or sufficient conclusions to the plot threads of the first season. That finale, ‘How To Stop An Exploding Man’, was haphazard at best and from that moment onwards Heroes always struggled to reach the heights of Season 1.
For all its subsequent efforts, which included raising the stakes and introducing tons of new characters, Heroes never felt like leaving its comfort zone. Characters frequently cheated death, and it soon became the case that Sylar and Peter were just too powerful to be interesting onscreen. The show lost its sense of mystery and its atmosphere of tension, it quickly became something that was merely going through the motions.
Even with a remarkably weak second season, the third was somehow worse. By the time we reached Season 4, Heroes was only able to have brief moments of its former self, not even really able to create a full episode that was worthwhile. All things considered, despite its truly compelling and exciting first season, I think it would’ve been better if this particular series was put out of its misery two years earlier than it actually was.
Agree entirely. I remember the hype around the first series and it did have promise but the subsequent series were truly shocking.
I remember thinking it was just X-Men re-branded and hyped - nothing amazingly original. Glad that I fell off the wagon at the end of season 1.
