Well that was rock week, folks. Or as I prefer to think of it, a rock song version of Where’s Wally. You knew there was a rock song in there somewhere, but you needed to dedicate quite a lot of time to find it, and would have no doubt found everything else first. That aside, let’s look back at the weekend’s events…

Ever since this series started, the attention has been as much on the new judges as the contestants. Recently, there has been particular concern that there isn’t enough of a spark between them; well, I think this week certainly went some way to proving that this isn’t the case, with fireworks flying a full two weeks before the Bonfire Night Special.

Things didn’t get off to a good start when Gary, whose sense of humour remained bypassed throughout, almost had a fight with someone swearing in the front row. (He just needs to f*****g chill, doesn’t he?) As for Kelly, she looked to be in a mood all night; she didn’t even say “put it down” once. Tulisa initially seemed quite upbeat before descending into unnecessarily bitchy comments towards Misha, and this was where things really kicked off; they practically started slapping each other live on air. It was very dramatic and very petty, making for rather uncomfortable viewing. Poor Misha looked devastated as they completely ignored her flawless vocals. (Though am I alone in finding ‘Purple Rain’ a really boring song?)

Up until this point, though, I’ve been very impressed with the judges, who do actually seem to be doing some mentoring, and they genuinely (I’m on a mission to get that word in every week) seem to care about their acts, especially Tulisa, who’s in bits every time one of them so much as sneezes. It was also nice to see some honesty this week, with Gary admitting that Frankie Coboozer was frankly atrocious last week. What he didn’t say was that he was pretty naff this week as well.

That brings us nicely to this week’s performances. Unlike previous weeks, there was a definite winner of the ‘Performance of the Week Prize’. It was… (wait for it)… Johnny!! For once, his little quips to Gary (I still haven’t got over the “rub my lamp” one) didn’t overshadow his performance; a performance which was, put simply, brilliant. His energy and astounding falsetto made his performance 2 minutes of sheer joy. I don’t even think he’s a guilty pleasure anymore; he’s just a pleasure. Johnny to win!

In other news, Craig did Oasis’ least rocky song, Rhythmix decided that rock week was a good opportunity to do some rapping, and poor Sami was forced to sing ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’, a song most commonly heard at my uncle’s birthday parties, though, admittedly, not sung as well, or as soberly. It’s certainly a shame that she got the boot before she got the chance to completely blow us away, but, let’s face it, Led Zeppelin would have lost out in order to keep Queen of Controversy Kitty in. OK, she shouldn’t have been in the bottom 2 in the first place, but where Sami was note-perfect in the sing-off, Kitty continued to struggle with the quieter bits of her song, where she sounded like someone demonstrating what Henry the hoover would sound like if he started to sing Lady Gaga.

Well that’s another week over with, and Frankie lives to murder another song. Excitingly, next week, it’s the Halloween special! Just when I thought it couldn’t get any scarier…
