The Week in TV

American Horror Story
Saturday, 5th November 2011
  • TV Picks

Don’t go outside this week! It’s cold, wet and covered in treacherously soggy leaves. Stay home, make some cocoa and turn on the TV instead. Watching these will be a lot more fun than battling with an inside-out umbrella in the middle of Market Square, we promise.

1) Switch to BBC2 on Thursday evening and just stay glued. The gloriously funny Rev returns for a second series at 9pm and stars Tom Hollander, Olivia Colman and a certain Hugh Bonneville.

2) Following that, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s new sitcom, Life’s Too Short, makes its long anticipated debut, with Warwick Davis starring as a nastier version of himself. Anything less than brilliant and it’s going to receive such a panning…

3) Look out for American Horror Story, showing on FX, 10pm on Monday. It has witches. And gore. And screaming children. And it’s written by the team behind Glee. Why wouldn’t you watch it?

4) Seriously, do watch WOMEN!, it’s HILARIOUS!

5) It’s the series finale of Downton Abbey on Sunday, and with rumours of a double wedding, a death or two, and a long-awaited comeuppance, it looks like it’s going to be another uneventful episode…

But there's more! Check back later in the week for reviews and our rather spiffing blogs on Young Apprentice and Strictly Come Dancing...

The Killing II

- BBC4 have confirmed that The Killing II starts on Saturday 19th November! And with the promise of an even tenser, more densely plotted series, despite having half the number of episodes, it looks like Lund’s indestructible jumper is going to be tested to the limit.

- In the least surprising recommission this week, ITV announced that Downton Abbey will return for a third series next September. Strange, we didn’t know anybody watched it…

- More surprisingly, over in the US, Fox have announced that they have renewed The X Factor USA for a second season. Well at least it keeps Simon Cowell off our shores.

- In UK X Factor news, it is rumoured that there will be a double elimination on Sunday. Surely that means Frankie’s got to go?

- Perhaps the most surprising announcement this week is that Channel 4 have recomissioned flop show 10 O’Clock Live. However, they have such faith in the show that the number of episodes has been reduced and 20 minutes have been lopped off the episodes’ running time.

- Congratulations to the immeasurably loveable Bernard Cribbins, who collected his thoroughly deserved OBE on Thursday. Doctor Who just isn’t the same without those heart-breaking eyes of his.

- And finally: Celebrity Spotted! Charlie Hardwick, who plays Val Pollard on Emmerdale, was on the same train as Jacob on Thursday night! Feeling a bit starstruck, he just smiled at her pathetically as she walked past, and she gave him the loveliest smile back! It fair put a spring in his step; there was certainly no worry about minding the gap between the train and the platform edge.

Remember to follow us on Twitter @YorkerArts! The Dowager Countess of Downton definitely would, if she had a computer.
