Strictly Come Dancing blog: Top 10

Strictly Come Dancing
Tuesday, 8th November 2011

What a triumph Jennifer Grey was as a guest judge. I just adored those completely brilliant, totally spontaneous and technically filled comments, and the wide range of scores she gave, from 9 all the way down to 7. And I had to respect her for refusing to stoop to the show's level and make any Dirty Dancing puns.

Yeah, maybe next time when Len goes off for a week because he prefers Dancing with the Stars, just replace him with Karen Hardy. Or Ian Waite. Or stick an 8 panel in his chair. Still, absence of Mr Goodman did allow Craig to actually make some criticisms without having “BUT THIS IS A HARD DANCE FOR A SPORTSMAN/TALL PERSON/LULU” shouted at him, which was rather refreshing.

Poor Jason found himself in the bottom of half of the leaderboard, but then the rumba is hard for men, as we are continually reminded. Look, Chris Hollins managed a decent rumba in week one. It's not that difficult. Oh well, Jason, you've got it out of the way now, and you have the joy of getting to make a “comeback” next week. At the other end of the scale, Harry coped well with another Latin dance THAT IS HARD FOR MEN, the samba. I'm not really a fan of the samba, with its difficult beat and double bounce action, so I'm glad Harry managed to get through it with dignity.

With a wistful waltz (Arlene's Alliteration Axis, RIP), Robbie certainly seemed more comfortable, but it was completely forgettable and all this whining about his marks is starting to get a bit annoying. You beat Jason, what more do you want? Much better in the ballroom stakes was Alex's mad quickstep. The quickstep is one of my favourite dances to watch, I loved the song, and Alex coped marvellously with her wardrobe malfunction. Sure, it wasn't the best technically, but her face was a delight throughout, and I was totally with Bruno about the fall at the end: EXTRA POINT!

Also pretty good, and a little undermarked, was Holly. Artem is such a brilliant choreographer that he managed to create a laid-back, cool jive that suited her to a tee. But I am so totally over the Russell thing; his paso doble was just naff, and the way the programme is trying so hard to convince us that he's the funniest thing since Ricky Groves did a jive makes me even less likely to enjoy it.

We also had this year's first Charlestons, and I was expecting Anita to ham it up an awful lot more, but she was oddly lifeless and still not technically that great, so of course, the judges praised it to high heaven and gave her 31. Chelsee, on the other hand, managed to continue to blossom with lovely Pasha at her side. Her Charleston was a little sloppy at times, but they were pretty in synch for most of it and she gave it enough verve without going over the top. Hi, Dr Pamela!

Once again, poor Audley found himself in the bottom two. His Viennese waltz was as charming-if-not-so-great as you'd expect, with Natalie's skirt doing overtime once more. But, despite Brendan's best tango/stairs choreography efforts, it was Lulu who found her Strictly time had run out. Tess and Craig, she was ranked joint second bottom; this was most certainly not a shock boot.

Poor Lulu, she was doomed from the moment she forgot her first dance and Anita was designated as this year's “talented older lady”. I'd say she'll be remembered for flying, but Widdecome got there a year earlier no matter how much Lulu gripes about only using ONE WIRE. So, she'll be remembered for singing 'Shout' in desperation? Yeah, that's about it.
