Unexploded bomb found on Hull Road

Bomb Disposal Unit
Monday, 9th January 2012
Written by Alan Belmore

A suspected unexploded World War II shell was uncovered on Lawrence Street this afternoon, 9 January 2012.

Workers on the building site adjacent to Melrosegate crossing uncovered the shell at around 1 o’clock this afternoon forcing an evacuation of the site and the closing of Lawrence Street in both directions.

The Yorker spoke to the team that uncovered the half metre long shell as they were laying foundations for new student flat development. On finding the bomb a site worker explained: “As soon as I found the shell I alerted the site management. This is the first time we’ve experienced anything like this.”

A bomb disposal van has arrived and The Yorker understands that a bomb disposal team have just entered the site.

Police cordoned off the road and traffic was diverted down Melrosegate as the potential explosive is examined.

The cordon was removed at 3.15pm after bomb disposal experts had removed the device following an X-ray.

York was the scene of heavy bombing in World War II and houses built in the 50s frequently built over rather than removed unexploded shells. The discovery of the bomb raises concerns about other areas in the city which have not been redeveloped since the 50s. One construction site worker told The Yorker: “All you need is for one brick to fall awkwardly and the whole site could have blown up.”
