The Freshers' Guide to the Web

Keyboard
Thursday, 11th October 2007
If you're the stereotypical student, chances are Freshers' Week (or is it fortnight again?) will involve mostly alcohol and parties. But once you get over the hangover, you'll need to start thinking about how to juggle your work/life balance (don't laugh). As is always the case in this modern age, the web comes to your aid.

I guess if you're reading this you've already found it, but The Yorker promises to be a major source of information, news and advice. So use it. You're lucky, this is the yorker's first proper year! Do you think it could be even better? Then join it and tell us how!

Chances are you've heard of it. Otherwise, as everyone said when it first came out: Be prepared to lose your life. Which is kind of ironic since it's supposed to be a social networking site. This only became available in York during my first year (shortly before it became available to everyone) and it was ridiculously popular.

Yes, it's a stalker's dream, but everyone uses it so you might as well join in. If you don't have it you'll probably be out of the loop. And anyway, it's a great way to waste time when you should be working.

If you want to hear it straight from the horse's mouth (and that ISN'T a comment on any of the committee members' appearance) this is the place to go. This is also where you're likely to have to go to vote when that time of year comes. The site has seen a bit of a revamp over summer, so even if you're not a fresher you might want to check it out.

Ok, so right now it's the last thing on your mind. But most people (I do know quite a few who haven't) take out books from the library at some point during their course.

You can search the whole catalogue and reserve books, but the real use for it is the ability to renew books online, which can save you a few pennies when you haven't got time (or simply can't be bothered) to return them.

More of a warning than a recommendation. Wikipedia is great to expand your general knowledge, and by all means use it as a starting point when researching for assignments. But do not fall into the trap of using it as a reference - check out the references on the wikipedia page themselves. And make sure you've got other, more reliable sources.

A source who'd rather not be named told me: "Everytime I haven't been bothered to get a book out of the library for one of my essays, I've used JSTOR - and I'm on a decent 2:1." I guess that sums it up really. You can search for keywords within essays and articles and I'm told the material is of very high quality - being an electronics student I haven't actually used it myself. To use it you will need your ATHENS account.

Note: JSTOR is a source of information, no one is saying you should submit any material found as your own. That would be just plain stupid.

Stating the obvious; that I am. But there is tons of information on here, so if you're ever curious as to just what the university has to offer (apart from your course), look on here.

Note that the yorker takes no responsibility for the content of these sites. Except the yorker itself, obviously.

Have you seen something interesting, cool or just plain weird on the web? Would you like to comment or complain about this column? Email me at dominic_freeston@theyorker.co.uk.

You have missed out BBC sport. It may not be useful as such, but since I have spent at least half my time reading it whilst at Uni it is pretty relevant! Great column btw
