In the last couple of years Facebook and Myspace have introduced the world to the, admittedly egotistical but still pleasurable, pursuit of immortalising ourselves in internet form. However if you feel like you’ve outgrown Facebook a little, or just that it’s taken over your life to greater degree than is acceptable, then why not try making your own website from scratch?

Obviously if you’ve been keeping your ear to the ground you’ll know that the word on the street is ‘blogs’. Oh how the media love the idea that Joe Public can express his innermost thoughts and that the rest of us care enough to read it.

However if you really have got something to contribute to human thought then blog to your heart’s content at vox.Just sign up and you can create your own site within minutes without having to know any programming speak at all. Bonus.

A bit of selective searching can lead you to some really interesting blogs. Guardian Unlimited features blogs by all sorts of knowledgeable and interesting people, from Gordon Brown to Gerry Adams.

My personal favourite political blog though comes from the ever-intriguing mind of Boris Johnson. It’s like having a little chat with Boris every day.

If that all sounds a bit serious for you then why not check out some comedy blogs? York’s very own Dan Atkinson blogs at Chortle.com or for some diversity head to the BBC’s comedy blog.

If all this inspires you but, like me, you just don’t think that your life is interesting enough to bother to read, or in fact write, about why not wait until you’re actually doing stuff other than popping to the library or eating a sandwich from Freshers? By this I mean travelling.

There are loads of sites out there that will allow you to upload your adventures, as well as your route and photos totally free and gratis. The genius of this is that not only will your Mum know you’re safe but your friends can check it at work and experience all-consuming jealousy.

Of course if you just don’t feel like travelling all that far through cyberspace why not check out The Yorker’s very own bloggers who between them cover arts, sports, campus and world news? If you do set up your own blog feel free to post a link below and we might just take a look.
