Cocktail Society: Burns night
Enjoy responsibly (with haggis)

Some of you may already know that the 25th January is Burns night, a celebration of the life and poetry of the Scottish poet, Robert Burns. A Burns supper is traditionally accompanied by whiskey. However, for all you cocktail lovers who want to try something slightly more contemporary this year, we at The Cocktail Society have put together a list of some of our favourite whiskey based cocktails for you to try out.
Robbie Burns
The Robbie Burns, dutifully named after the man himself just has to be top of the list.
Ingredients:
- ½ measure of sweet vermouth
- ½ measure of scotch whiskey
- ¼ measure of Benedictine
- Finely grated lemon zest
Instructions:
- Shake the first three ingredients together gently.
- Pour into an unchilled tumbler.
- Sprinkle with the lemon zest.
The Flying Scotsman
Ingredients:
- Crushed ice
- Dash of Angostura bitters
- 2 measures of scotch whiskey
- 1 measure of sweet vermouth
- ¼ tsp sugar syrup
Instructions:
To make the sugar syrup:
- Place equal amounts of sugar and water in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat and simmer gently until the mixture condenses into clear, sweet syrup (approximately 5 minutes).
- Cool (you can use immediately or store indefinitely in a sealed container in the refrigerator).
To finish the cocktail:
- Put some crushed ice into a blender.
- Add a dash of Angostura bitters over the ice and add the whiskey, vermouth and sugar syrup.
- Blend until slushy and pour into a chilled tumbler.
Whiskey Sour Wobbly Shot
A new twist on a classic cocktail - perfect for a modern ending to a Burns night supper.
Ingredients:
- 1 packet of lemon jelly
- 125ml of hot water
- 225ml bourbon
Instructions:
- Place the jelly in a large heatproof measuring jug.
- Pour in the hot water and stir until dissolved and then leave to cool.
- Stir in the bourbon.
- Divide between eight shot glasses and chill until set.
A Scotch Cocktail
A delicious cocktail and just the drink to warm you on a cold winter night.
Ingredients:
- 2 measures of Scotch whiskey
- 1 measure of cream
- 1 measure of honey
Instructions:
- Mix all the ingredients well in a warmed glass and leave to cool.
