Beginner's Guide to York Nightclubs

Ziggy's
The Wednesday night of York Uni
Wednesday, 18th August 2010
York has the reputation of a city bursting with historic pubs and quiet bars, but lacking in the nightclub department. It is true that York possesses none of the giant sprawling clubbing metropolises of other student cities such as Leeds or Manchester, but on the whole, nightlife in York tends to be cheaper, safer and within reasonable walking distance of the campus or your student house. You might not get introduced to all of these clubs in Freshers' Week, but rest assured, if you’re a person who enjoys going out, you’ll have some kind of encounter with them at some point during your first year.

Fibbers As well as being York University's new official Monday night destination, Fibbers also runs York's only gay-friendly club night on Sundays. Open until 3am, it plays a variety of chart and student classics.

Tokyo Formerly known as Tru, Tokyo nightclub is now the official Tuesday night of the University. Recently refurbished, Tokyo will offer a brand-spanking new clubbing experience for you lucky freshers.

Ziggy’s Wednesday night is the domain of the infamous Ziggy’s, a nightclub-cum-house party that plays host to the many sports teams on fancy dress socials. Be prepared to queue unless you arrive early, and try to avoid the always-massive line for the horrible loos. Ziggy’s is always crowded and dancing space is usually at a minimum, but it holds an excellent cheese-fest on the top floor and a hot and sweaty chart dance floor in the basement, as well as being totally free to get into. Like Marmite, some love it, some hate it.

Salvation Club Salvation is the University’s official Thursday night, with two floors catering to different music tastes. It may feel rather small and crowded, but head upstairs and you’ll find a heated and covered smoking area and a room playing indie and more alternative music, usually less busy. The ground floor plays chart, RnB and towards the end of the night, cheesy songs, which are always a good way to end the night. Watch out for the stairs though, many an unfortunate girl in heels has fallen down them!

Willow Willow Disco as it is officially known, is a Chinese restaurant by day, haven to all cheese lovers by night. Open until 4am most nights, Willow is simply a room with a bar, some chairs by the sides and some toilets, but if you want to dance when all the clubs have shut, Willow is the place to be. Playing a wide mixture of 80s music, cheese and student anthems, the Willow offers free prawn crackers at the bar and is either loved intensely or hated intensely.

Reflex + Flares Reflex and Flares are two bars/clubs owned by the same company that dedicate themselves to the golden years of cheese. Reflex is the most popular, an 80s themed bar complete with revolving dance floor and mechanical bull and a mullet-sporting DJ playing 80s tunes. Flares, its sister bar, devotes itself to the 70s, with a flashing dance floor and afro wigs available to buy behind the bar. If you don’t mind middle-aged men and women leering at you now and again, then Reflex and Flares are an essential part of the York experience.

This guide only scratches the surface of the nightlife that York has to offer. Not mentioned are The Parish, a bar in a historic church, or Evil Eye, the atmospheric cocktail lounge which is a favourite of Johnny Depp’s, and if I wrote about bars and pubs, this article would never end. If you’re not into clubbing there are myriads of pubs, bars and cocktail bars to choose from, and the real excitement comes from discovering a place yourself!

"Fibbers also runs York's only gay-friendly club night on Sundays"... IS this to say that ALL other club nights do not welcome gay peeps?!
