Gamescom 2010 Preview

Gamescom
Tuesday, 17th August 2010
For a gamer, the months following E3 are full of plenty of reasons to get excited. Comic-Con holds a few surprises every year, Tokyo Game Show has Japanese booth babes, and the Penny Arcade Expo (PAX) always knows how to celebrate gaming culture.

But right now, in late August, it’s time to get excited about Gamescom!

E3 may get the most attention, but since starting last year Gamescom has actually become the world’s largest games event, with 245000 visitors, 4000 journalists and 458 exhibitors from 31 countries contributing to last year’s show.

This year, Gamescom will be held from 18 to 22 August in the Köln Messe centre in Cologne, Germany. Before the show starts, let’s look at some of the possible high profile announcements and surprises we can thank the gaming gods for...

Sony – If last year’s Gamescom is anything to go by, Sony’s conference may be one to watch. 12 months ago the PS3 Slim was unveiled, so hopes are high that Sony might reveal something big about a game or even a new piece of hardware. Will yet another PSP model be shown? A new Sony IP? Uncharted 3?? We’ll have to wait and see. I'd put money on the following making an appearance: Killzone 3, LBP 2, inFamous 2 and hopefully the long awaited debut of Resistance 3.

Microsoft – With the sexy new Xbox 360 model not long on the shelves, Microsoft is unlikely to make any massive announcements. However, Halo Reach and Fable 3 will surely get a fair amount of attention, and Kinect will hopefully get some more time in the spotlight. This may not seem like a lot now, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Nintendo – After a few absolutely dire E3 showings, Nintendo bounced back this year and showed off The Legend of Zelda: The Skyward Sword, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and more from Metroid: Other M, all of which will be on show at Gamescom, along with many more. Oddly, the amazing 3DS shown at E3 will not be making an appearance, so we’ll have to wait until another time and place to drool over it. Hopefully we’ll be able to get some new information on as many great looking titles as possible.

Blizzard – It’s pretty certain that any major news from Blizzard will be saved for BlizzCon in a few months, but that doesn’t mean we won’t hear more on Diablo III and the untitled MMO known to be in development. Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty has just been released to acclaim, so while riding on that wave of success maybe Blizzard will finally be kind enough to reveal the fifth character class for Diablo III.

Electronic Arts – Judging by last year, EA are likely to give updates on all their titles in development, including Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, Medal of Honor, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Dead Space 2 and many more. It’s a long shot, but a teaser for the final part of the Mass Effect trilogy would get jaws dropping. The Sims Medieval will be around too, no doubt.

Along with the big players, Gamescom will house showings from Konami, Square Enix, Valve, THQ, Ubisoft and many more.

But enough about rumours! Next week we’ll look back and discuss any big announcements from Germany.
