For the UK, monthly subscriptions will now be £5.99 instead of £4.99, and 12 month subscriptions will rise to either £44.99 or even £49.99, instead of the current £39.99.
In the USA, a yearly subscription will now set you back $59.99 instead of $49.99, and various other regions including Canada, Mexico and Europe will see similar price hikes.
The move was announced over Xbox Live by Major Nelson, who said on the matter:
“Since launching Xbox LIVE in 2002 we have continually added more content and entertainment experiences for our members, while keeping the price the same. We’re confident that when the new pricing takes effect, an Xbox LIVE Gold membership will continue to offer the best value in the industry.”
Coming at a time when money is tight for many gamers, this move will surely split the Xbox Live community. While some gamers will happily fork out the extra money, many are likely to cut back on their Xbox Live usage, perhaps opting for a three-month subscription, or even leaving completely. Microsoft have added a lot to Xbox Live recently, and new features mean there's more to do than ever, but is it worth spending even more money on?
Despite the many questions this announcement will raise, there's one thing we know for certain - Microsoft sure loves money....
Oh, life is good.
