Final Fantasy XIV in turmoil

Since the online release of Final Fantasy XIV a few months ago, the whole project has been plagued by controversy and complaints. Square Enix have responded to the complaints of insufficient, unfinished gameplay by sacking many of the management team responsible and extending the free-play time period. The release of the game for PlayStation 3 has been delayed past the original March 2011 release date. Square Enix have released a grovelling set of apologies and promised to uphold the standards of previous Final Fantasy games, none of which has reset the gaming boundaries since Final Fantasy 7, way back on the original PlayStation.

Rumours of new SSX game: armchair adrenalin junkies rejoice

SSX was a game for those who liked the thrill and excitement of pulling cool moves on a snowboard without the years of training and lifelong head injuries that real life snowboarding provided. Rumours have been abounding of a new SSX game following the registration of www.SSXDeadlyDescent.com. In addition a Q&A sheet sent out to SSX junkies hinted at new additions to the franchise, taking desolate snowy landscapes to their limit. It remains to be seen if this is true, but if so, that's Friday nights for the next few years sorted for me.

New phase for Minecraft

The popular indie game Minecraft is heading for new and unfamiliar territories. Games developers wish to add extraneous details to the franchise, such as a narrative to help gamers understand the point of the game in the initial stages. Minecraft never really needed a point; there is a world, go and make stuff in it. It's a relatively simple proposition. However, these details allow the price to be raised and a little more profit made: the price for the game will rise from 10 to 15 Euros. A relatively small price increase but it's enough to have some fans up in arms.

Mass Effect 3 blunder

Mass Effect 3, the rumoured sequel to the incredibly popular Mass Effect series, was inadvertently leaked today through the EA online store. The following blurb accompanied it: Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth. Though this gives away little, it promises that Mass Effect will be hitting the shelves once more.

The Minecraft price rise is not the real bone of contention. It's the removal of the "all future updates and expansions will be free" clause in the terms of use. While those who buy Minecraft now (until December 20th) will get all DLC and expansions for free, Notch cannot guarantee that those who buy in beta will be able to. I urge you to buy it now, but then, I would
