Infamous 2 release date unveiled
Infamous was a typical superhero game with a pretty good environment to roam around in, limited by a binary moral choice system and some pretty poor combat design. Its sequel has been announced for June 7th. What is new is a New-Orleans esque environment to add some flavour, as every superhero game ever seems to take place in a poorer replica of New York City, and stave off the attentions of “The Beast”. It sounds intriguing and hopefully will be one of the highlights of 2011.
Anniversary Week!
The past and coming week mark the anniversary of two enormous popular game franchises. Lemmings, a game in which I must have wasted hundreds of hours playing on the Playstation, celebrates its 20th anniversary. If you haven’t played it, you can probably find a copy on eBay cheap as chips or an online simulator. I just don’t recommend this the day before an essay! Also the monumental Legend of Zelda series celebrates its 25th anniversary on Monday. It’s safe to say along with Mario, the Zelda series is one of the most magical franchises with A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time held up as examples of perfect gaming (I like Wind Waker a lot but apparently that’s not true of everyone). If you by chance haven’t played one of these games I sincerely urge you to do so; you are missing out on gaming history.
Xperia Playstation Phone
The release of the Xperia, an Android phone with Playstation software upon it, is to be celebrated as continuing the spread of videogaming far and wide. Using the latest technology. Including emulators to download and play Gameboy Advance (ironic) and original Playstation games, it’s safe to say this gadget will take the market by storm.
Homefront Excitation
Good things are being heard about Homefront, a forthcoming first person shooter, where North Korea has invaded the United States. Putting aside all geopolitical implausibility (at least it makes a break from the Russians I suppose), the script writer has worked on Apocalypse Now and Red Dawn, which is cool, and fighting in a dilapidated urban environment should make this an enjoyable gaming experience. I’m taking bets now on when a firefight set piece round the fallen Statue of Liberty or the White House will take place.
The Xperia doesn't really have the latest technology. In terms of power it's roughly on par with an HTC Desire HD. Powerful, sure, but not compared to the sort of thing we've started to see since, such as dual core processors. Also Sony have pretty much the worst track record out there for Android phone support.
