I had written in the previous edition of a Modern Warfare 3 preview. That, as helpfully pointed out, was a fake. However I have more previews for you in the form of the Battlefield series.
Battlefield 3 Battlefield is second in popularity only to COD in the first person shooter stakes and like clockwork there are updates out at very regular intervals. The preview of Battlefield 3 doesn't seem to be breaking much ground in the originality stakes but does look immensely fun.
3DS breaks UK Preorder Record Another week, another 3DS newsbite: it has broken records for the amount of UK pre-orders taken. There have been over 100,000 - to put that in context, there are 185,000 3DS consoles earmarked for release in the UK, and the numbers keep rising! If you haven't pre-ordered, and want it soon, my recommendation would be to do so ASAP!
We Dare furore The Telegraph newspaper is leading the charge against a "scandalous" game called We Dare. The reason for this outrage is that the advert selling this game is decidedly racy, whereas the actual game itself is 12+. Though the classification board have said there is nothing within the game that could be construed as "adult" entertainment, there are still calls for its age rating to be upgraded. Here's the advert, and you can decide for yourself:
That was the most cringeworthy advert I have ever seen.
Dead Island Most zombie games either go for over-the-top splatter gore (Left For Dead) or horror (Resident Evil). It's rare to find a game that actually manages to pack an emotional punch, even more so within a 2 minute trailer. The Dead Island trailer manages to do precisely that. I know I'm a little late to the party but here it is anyway.
iPad 2 You didn't think I was going to ignore this, did you? By far the most reported technological news of the week was the upgrade to Apple's "tablet computer" the iPad 2. It has 2 cameras, at the front and the rear, is lighter, has an improved graphics system and is released in the USA on March 11th, with a UK release on March 25th. It does beg the question why you would have bought the original when Apple every year do update after update. Apple still dominate the tablet market, with other competitors just getting a look-in. However, there are rumours of the iPad 3 already floating around, which is merely proof of how fluid the market is that periodic updates are expected.
Here is Charlie Brooker's view for a bit of lighthearted comedy:
They're obviously trying to market We Dare to an adult audience, so it makes sense for it to be rated for adults. I mean, would you feel comfortable with your 12 year olds stripping for and spanking each other?
Just to note, the iPad is a tablet, not a tablet computer. A tablet computer is a proper computer with a touchscreen interface, packed into the small casing. The iPad, while powerful enough to be so, is not a proper computer. It runs iOS, a mobile operating system. The terms are similar yet distinct...
