Games News May 15th

In a week dominated by news of hacking and network outages, the announcement of some new games is a refreshing break before the dreaded "summer drought" kicks in.

PlayStation Network Back Online Last night, at around midnight, Sony finally began to bring the PlayStation Network back online, after almost a month of outage. This follows news earlier in the week in which the service was revealed to have limited availability for games developers. While there has been no major news regarding the culpability for the incident, aside Sony mulling the possibility of a reward for information, Sony have started to outline their compensation plans. From Sony Online Entertainment (the providers of Sony's MMO games), the affair has generally been free months of gameplay and exclusive in-game items. Regular PSN users have been told to expect two free PSN games, to be chosen from a list of five, though what these are remains to be seen. The relaunch will likely come as good news both to Sony and its fans, many of whom have been trading in their PS3s for 360s, or even cash!

Child of Eden is Looking Trippy Q Entertainment's second foray into the world of Synaesthesia (the producer was also behind Rez) is slowly looking more and more beautiful as screenshots and videos are released. Just like Rez, it's a rhythmic scrolling shooter - but Kinect functionality let's you fire bursts of bullets to the beat using your wild flailing. Don't worry, the ordinary controller can be used for those who want rhythmic rumbling; or if your arms get tired.

Modern Warfare 3 Information Starts to Trickle Out Earlier this week, information on the hotly anticipated (and frankly inevitable) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, started to trickle out onto the internet. The game is set to expand upon themes explored in 2009's Modern Warfare 2, and feature a global war, presumably featuring Russia and the United States. I'm going to admit, neither of us have ever actually played a Call of Duty game, so we're just going off what the Internet has told us. While little information has been officially revealed by the developers, four trailers have been released. In a perhaps controversial turn of events, the game will continue the tradition of CoD titles released in odd-numbered years being developed by Infinity Ward, who you may remember have been embroiled in a bitter dispute with Activision after several key members of the studio were dismissed in 2010. The game will likely be officially revealed at E3 next month

Just When You Thought the Hacking News Was Over... Moving on from the Playstation Network debacle, Square Enix has also been hit by script kiddies as sites for Eidos Montreal and Deus Ex: Human Revolution were broken into and defaced. Along with that, around 2,500 customers have had their e-mail addresses compromised, potentially along with 350 job applications for Eidos. The sites were claimed to be hacked by "Chippy1337", though at time of writing, no perpetrators have been formally identified. Let's hope a positive end can come of these hacking attempts; and companies take more care over our personal data. And remember: be careful who you give your e-mail addresses to!
