TF2 Waiting Room

With E3 over, and the E3 post-mortems having already been covered, it's back to business as usual, as gaming prepares to enter its "summer drought", major releases not coming until Autumn.

Duke Nukem Forever upsets reviewers and PR groups alike

After 12 years in development, Duke Nukem Forever has finally seen a release... and the responses are very much negative. Critics and consumers alike have complained about both the gameplay and the ineffective offensive humour it's built around. But these harsh words were too much for PR agency The Redner Group, who's twitter feed stated "too many went too far with their reviews...we r reviewing who gets games next time and who doesn't based on today's venom".

This threat was considered a step too far by almost everyone involved, and the Tweet was hastily removed; with publisher 2K Games no longer employing The Redner Group for their PR dealings. But is that enough to stem the floodgates of Duke Nukem dislike in the games community?

Steam introduces Free to Play Games to its Roster

The Steam gaming service has been making leaps and bounds in the last two years, with an increasing number of PC releases being downloadable from the service, rather than bought in-store. In the past, the only free downloads it offered were free demos and videos of full games, but this week they've announced their first batch of Free to Play (F2P) online games.

  • Spiral Knights
  • Forsaken World
  • Champions Online: Free for All
  • Global Agenda: Free Agent
  • Alliance of Valliant Arms

Free online games like these are a great way to burn an idle weekend with friends if you can't hang out in person. Give these a whirl, and see if you find a favourite.

Bioware and Bethesda Targeted in Hacks

We may as well have a new article called “week in hacking” at the rate this is going. Once again, LulzSec have targeted multiple websites with the intent of raising awareness about security. Bethesda Softworks’ Brink had its servers hacked, however no personal data was taken, the hackers claiming they didn’t want to inconvenience the company’s development of Skyrim. Meanwhile Bioware’s Neverwinter Nights forum was hacked, and the details of around 18,000 users leaked. The collective also succeeded in taking down the websites of The Escapist, EVE Online and Minecraft, as well as, perhaps ironically, the CIA. To celebrate all this (as well as its 1,000th tweet) the organisation published (NSFW) its manifesto on pastebin, laying out its aims as well as justifying its actions.

Valve Teasing Team Fortress 2 Update

The Valve Corporation, publishers of Half-Life, Portal and Team Fortress 2 are teasing a new update for their flagship shooter, potentially the long-awaited “Meet the Medic” video. Before several major updates to the game, the company has released a short video (all viewable here) detailing the history of and information about one of the game’s nine classes. Since the game’s release in 2007, seven out of nine videos have been released, the most recent being “Meet the Spy” in May 2009. The company has begun to tease a potential new video with medical-themed images on the game’s blog (click the birds), with many anticipating the video to launch soon. After this, there will be only one video left to do (“Meet the Pyro”), which raises an interesting question about the game’s future. On the other hand, Valve have a strong reputation for supporting old titles, and the game’s userbase and popularity are unlikely to wane soon.
