Week in Games - November 18th

As the holiday period hots up, new announcements are sparse, but there are plenty of games to be released!

Bethseda Provoke Family into Ruining Child's Future - Way back in February, Bethseda employee Pete Hines made a rather silly blog post saying that anyone who names their child Dovahkiin ("Dragonborn" in the fantasy language in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim) on 11/11/11, Skyrim's release date, they and their child will recieve free Bethseda games for life.

Unfortunately, there are people cruel enough to condemn their child's future for free games; Megan and Eric Kellermeyer now have a son, Dovahkiin Tom Kellermeyer, and Bethseda are making good on their word. If there was any doubt that obsessive nerds can ruin the lives of others, look no farther than this... Poor kid.

Super Snow Cross Reboot is Swiftly Approaching - SSX Tricky is one of my (Nathan's) favourite Playstation 2 titles, and although the series has diverted a little from its magesty over the years, EA is insisting that it hasn't forgotten the magic - releasing a trailer to the tune of a remixed "It's Tricky" by Run D.M.C - SSX Tricky's theme song.

This current-gen reboot is looking a lot more cold and gritty than past games, and this dubstep-heavy remix matches the changes quite sussinctly. However, the over-the-top snowboarding action looks to remain perfectly intact. And I suppose that's what matters.

Minecraft Finally Released It's not a secret that I'm (Cieran) somewhat of a fan of Minecraft, and this week marks a huge milestone in the game's development - release. The game was officially launched on Friday afternoon, after two and a half years of development, at the "Minecon" convention in Las Vegas. While the game is functionally no different to the way it was before Friday aside the addition of a couple of new features, it is now officially on release, meaning the cost of the game has gone up from €15 to €20. In related news, the game recently passed its four millionth sale, despite still running no paid advertisements (though the coverage in pretty much every gaming publication, this one included, can't have hindered its success). Also released on Friday was the version of the game for iOS devices such as the iPad and iPhone. While only featuring a parred down set of tools to play with, and still being very much an alpha release, iOS owners can now be content that they're getting something Android users had two months ago. Look out for our review on Thursday!

Nintendo Clarifies Position on DLC

It's no secret that Nintendo have never exactly done well in terms of the Internet - the experience using the Wii's offering can certainly be compared to the 12-year-old Dreamcast. While the 3DS certainly makes for a more pleasant experience, Nintendo still seem reluctant to fully embrace the online capabilities of modern consoles, noteably in the form of downloadable content (DLC), or rather its lack thereof. However, in an interview this week, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime stated that upcoming updates to the 3DS' firmware wil allow DLC to be sold on the console. Despite this, Fils-Aime stated that Nintendo itself would not be selling DLC whose only purpose was to complete an incomplete game. This is a somewhat admirable position, giving the increasing trend of games companies to sell a game followed by DLC at release offering key levels (a recent example would be Batman: Arkham City).

The mention of SSX has taken me back to my early teenage years. Really wishing I had my trusty old PS2 in York now (although for the sake of my degree I'm glad I don't!)
