Students shocked by late night robbery

Police
Tuesday, 20th January 2009
Students living in Southbank were awakened at 2am when a robbery triggered a police response.

Police were called to the area at 2.23am last Friday after six, possibly seven people, assaulted and robbed two residents.

A second year history and politics student who lives in the area told The Yorker: "I heard them in the street and was too scared to look out of my window. My house-mate and I had a peek outside and saw a few men running off down the street."

She added: "I was very surprised since my landlady told me this had a reputation for being a safe area."

The two men, aged 43 and 25, had their wallets and mobiles stolen. The 25 year old male suffered facial injuries in the attack and was taken to hospital.

Five men and one woman were arrested and police are currently looking for a sixth man who they suspect may have been involved.

The five men have been released on bail and the woman has been released with no further charges.

Students have been affected by crime in the area previously, with warnings being sent out after a spate of attacks last term.

There has been a big increase in burglaries from cars in the South Bank area recently too.

This is pretty frightening stuff.

Fortunately our security forces have captured the professional thieves who will now be removed from society and re-educated. It is unfortunate that if they cannot behave in a constructive fashion then they will be aborted.
