Overheard in York

Overheard
Overheard
Monday, 4th January 2010
New Facebook group “Overheard at York” is quickly becoming a popular medium for sharing embarrassing conversations overheard at the University of York. Students are encouraged to post anonymous anecdotes for the perusal of over one thousand current members.

Created by Finlay Chalmers, a third year Language and Linguistics student last Easter, the group has suddenly flourished with members posting almost hourly over the last week. Chalmers told the Yorker that he had forgotten about the group until recently when it suddenly took off. He further added that running the group was not very demanding, his only obligation being to remove posts that mention names.

The York group is just one of many Facebook groups that have been springing up all over the country with similar formats. Some groups, however, do not ban ‘naming and shaming’, indeed in Bristol it is encouraged.

The concept of Overheard began in New York when Michael Malice and S. Morgan Friedman created a blog ‘In Passing’ in 2000. The blog quickly became popular and spread to other cities around the world.
