A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.

A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Created by Finlay Chalmers, a third year Language and Linguistics student last Easter, the group has suddenly flourished with members posting almost hourly over the last week. Chalmers told the Yorker that he had forgotten about the group until recently when it suddenly took off. He further added that running the group was not very demanding, his only obligation being to remove posts that mention names.
The York group is just one of many Facebook groups that have been springing up all over the country with similar formats. Some groups, however, do not ban ‘naming and shaming’, indeed in Bristol it is encouraged.
The concept of Overheard began in New York when Michael Malice and S. Morgan Friedman created a blog ‘In Passing’ in 2000. The blog quickly became popular and spread to other cities around the world.
