A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Heads of societies, college chairs, volunteering groups and many more attended to support nominations for the wide-ranging assortment of awards. The three hour ceremony saw many ecstatic winners take the stage to say a few words of thanks and collect their prizes.
RAG announced this year’s college contribution to charity which was over £6,000. According to RAG officers Jon Hare and James Croydon, the University of York’s students donate more to charity per person than anywhere else in the country. This year’s ‘most charitable college’ to RAG was Goodricke College while the ‘Dame Judy Dench Volunteering Cup’ went to Halifax. Kids Club were awarded the ‘overall project of the year award’ and Derwent College were the ecstatic winners of the ‘creativity college volunteering project award’.
The society awards were extremely contested and hugely popular with attendees. RENT was awarded ‘performance of the year’ and URY won ‘most developed society’. Dancesport were named the ‘most collaborative club of the year’ and ex chair Luke Malkin was one of the winners of the prestigious ‘outstanding leadership award’.
Individual awards were given to many students for their personal contribution to student life. Daria Pawlowska was awarded for ‘international perspectives’ in response to her dedication to ISA as president this year. Anna Bucks and Henry Foy won the ‘Greg Dyke award for student media’ against stiff competition.
The evening concluded with a motivational speech from Lewis Bretts about the importance of getting involved in YUSU. He said that without student participation, our union would be much less impressive.
The three hour ceremony was on the whole a great success. The comperes were rather cheesy, the event dragged on a little but the free wine, snacks and goody bags certainly mollified the attendees. A truly great way to end the academic year.
