A group of York students has won the opportunity to have their very own I-phone application developed after winning The App Challenge final, held at the Ron Cooke Hub on Wednesday, January 18.
YUSU Welfare officer Bob Hughes has warned students to be vigilant after a student loans phishing scam has been revealed.

A flood caused by a heating system “failure” forced the university IT services to shut down many essential systems on Sunday night, causing problems for many students on the eve of their exams and assignment due-dates.
Tokyo Industries, who also recently purchased Fibbers, took control on Tru this past Friday. They expect to have the club, which will be renamed Tokyo, open by the 22nd September, in time for its first York St. John student night. The company have agreed a deal with YUSU to have an official night for University of York students every Thursday.
Fibbers will also be holding a York University night every Monday, which means that York students will now have student nights across the city every night from Sunday through to Thursday. Salvation will continue to run its Tuesday session for University of York students and YUSU have also agreed a deal with Revolution for a student session on Sunday. Though it is not an official YUSU club night, Ziggy's continues to prove popular with York students on a Wednesday night. Luminar-owned club The Gallery no longer has an official student session.
In a blog on the YUSU website announcing the new official student nights, Democracy and Services Officer Dan Walker said: "Some of you knew change was on its way, and that the club landscape of York was about to take a pretty dramatic turn." Walker added: "The official clubs represent what should be the best quality and value for money in York. The line-up intends to provide a range of venues and music which York has, in the past, lacked."
Tokyo Industries, who own and operate nineteen live music and nightclub venues across the UK, have promised to give Tru a “lavish makeover”. A new sound system from Funktion One will be installed and the main club will be rebranded in the style of “Tokyo”, a nightclub which can also be found in Newcastle, Huddersfield, Bradford and Oldham. The upstairs room of the club will also be transformed and is set to open at the start of October, when it will become an exclusive members’ venue with a separate entrance.
Aaron Mellor, the Managing Director of Tokyo Industries, said he was surprised at how neglected Tru nightclub had become. Mellor said: “The old Toffs was a fantastic club, layout-wise it’s still one of the best we’ve been to and three great rooms offer a choice of music selection. The place had just lost its love, a poor drinks selection, even worse sound system, and no real attention to customer service – it needs some sparkle adding back.”
Mellor added: “Tru is getting one of the UK’s best sound systems from Funktion One and some of the world’s biggest DJs and club brands – many have never visited York – are set to play here. York is a great city, with some great bars but it lacks a great club.”
Fibbers, which will now become Tru’s sister venue and is also currently undergoing refurbishment, is set to reopen on 3rd September when The Courteeners will perfom there. Other gigs lined up include Two Door Cinema Club on 12th September and Shed Seven on 17th September.
Nigel Holiday, Business Development Director of Tokyo Industries, said: “I live in York; I’m originally from Pickering and went to university here so I’m well aware there’s a real need for something more than a typical nightclub experience in York. People want better drinks selections in today’s clubs; they deserve better sound and some really great DJs and entertainment.”
In addition to holding student nights for the University of York and York St. John University, on Thursdays and Wednesdays respectively, Tokyo Industries have also lined up “Lovedough” for Friday nights at the Tokyo York club. The Lovedough brand was used in York when there was an Icon club in the city, and will involve international DJ talent.

AWESOME Can't wait for the Japanese influence to spice it up
"The upstairs room of the club will also be transformed and is set to open at the start of October, when it will become an exclusive members’ venue with a separate entrance."
It's worth noting that this room will be accessible from the inside of the main club, although by a new route, and should be open to all on Thursday's student night.
Some good research in this article, very informative.
What will happen to the LGBT social's gay night?
@Anonymous - It will still be happening, it's just been moved to Fibbers. It'll be relaunched there on 5th September: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=29664769064
Club nights are rocking up in York!
Agreed! I came to York three years ago and all that was on offer was Toffs/Ziggy's/Gallery, so I'm really excited to see the development of Fibbers, Revs and Tokyo (I'm not much of a Salvation fan)
Tokyo Oldham and Huddersfield are top venues. Hudds is better due to the size and the venue formerly known as Tru will be much better with this renovation!
Kind of surprised that Tokyo would take control of two venues in the same town.
I am from Bradford and Tokyo is widely considered the best club overall here so I'm very excited to see how the Tokyo in York compares.
