Artsweek 10 - now with 80% more food-based metaphors!

Grammatics
Grammatics
Monday, 10th December 2007
Week 10, for many of you, will seem like another Freshers' week, which really isn't that long after the 'another Freshers' week' that is reading week, or the one that takes over week 2 when you realise that the prospect of being sober is becoming less and less attractive. But if you have managed to survive the 9 weeks of term with some of your sensory faculties intact, you might want to sample some of the fruits of York's tree of the arts this week.

First up is the excellent double-header of The Sugars and The Yorker favourites Grammatics at Leeds' Brudenell Social Club on Tuesday. If you need a bit of indie (and even a splashing of reserved emo) to dance off the encroaching darkness of winter this could be just the ticket. The Sugars' golden-syrup sticky soul-pop is of the ilk that will shine in a small live venue like the Brudenell. Not to say that their recorded out put isn't going places, recent release Way To My Heart/End Of Our Love Affair flew into the top 10 if the indie charts.

If sickly-sweet is your thing then you doubtless will have noticed the adverts for the latest offering from Disney's studios, Enchanted, which is released on Thursday. The film puts a twist on the classic Disney fairy story by transporting its characters into the real world. Although they only remain as drawings momentarily before popping into genuine human form, this still has the Who Killed Roger Rabbit factor of cartoon conventions causing chaos in our world. A highlight of the trailer comes at the end, as the Prince breaks into song after finally finding his Princess in Central Park: "I've been dreami..." *gets hit by bike* "ow!" With witches, dragons and cute little animals what more can you want from popcorn entertainment?

However, if all that sucrose is putting a hole in your teeth, you might want something a little more substantial to cross your lips... how about actually amazing band The Sorry Kisses at Basement Bar on Thursday? The band combine female vocals of the kind most successful in 90s female-led bands with bang-up-to-date guitar backings - Echobelly for the twentieth-century, anyone? Support comes from excellent York residents The Pieces and GT Turbo.

Lovely. I hope you've had an arts-tastic term and you've satiated your appetite by checking out some of these recommendations. Artsweek will be back in the new year, more excited and better informed than ever. See you then!
