Top 10: Greatest Moustaches in Film and TV

Moustache Chaplin
Wednesday, 6th October 2010
Since the beginning of human civilisation, the institution of the moustache has served to differentiate the trustworthy from the treacherous, the dynamic from the flaccid, and the sublime from the chaff. Granted, there have been a few exceptions to this general rule (Hitler and Stalin dealt moustache culture a serious blow in the ‘40s and ‘50s), but this doesn’t change the fact that, when done properly, a moustache is a thing of special magnificence. In television and cinema, for instance, the moustache has usually been the hallmark of the morally virtuous, the unswervingly confident, and the charmingly witty. The following pioneers of iconic facial hair demonstrate to us that a good moustache is always a good investment.

10. Charlie Chaplin The original cinematic powerhouse, Chaplin was a global star in the era of silent-films. His well-known physical comedy remains iconic to this day, and he co-founded the studio United Artists. His equally well-known moustache also became a legend and cultural icon in its own right.

9. Salvador Dali

Dali’s talents extended to film-making, painting, photography and sculpture. As renowned as he was for his artistic variety and originality however, he was preceded by the reputation of his flamboyant moustache, which he grew as a tribute to the 17th century Spanish master-painter Diego Velazquez.

8. Earl Hickey and Darnell Turner

Technically two moustaches, Jason Lee (Earl) and Eddie Steeples (Darnell) were always entertaining as the mismatched best friends from My Name Is Earl. Though now cancelled, the show will always be remembered for its excellent display of mid-western American moustache culture.

7. Ned Flanders

Everyone knows the Simpsons’ next door neighbour is a man of God, and there is certainly something Godly about his ‘nose-neighbour’. Ned even felt so strongly about his moustache that he once quit his job and uprooted his family, just so he could proudly display his moustache – that’s true dedication.

6. Dick Van Dyke

Though many of his more iconic roles were disgustingly clean-shaven, no one can grow a moustache like the Dyke-man. He confounded villains for years on Diagnosis: Murder, no doubt, we may assume, due to the semi-mystical powers of his magnificent facial hair.

5. Hércule Poirot

Agatha Christie’s omniscient detective, as played by David Suchet, sported a limited but proud and always well-kept moustache, proving once and for all that quantity matters less than quality.

4. Burt Reynolds

The Deliverance star is an instantly recognisable screen icon, but he wouldn’t be half so if it weren’t for his trusty moustache.

3. Billy Dee Williams

Lando Calrissian took on the evil empire and won in the Star Wars trilogy, and do you want to know why? May the moustache be with you.

2. Sam Elliott

Rent-a-cowboy Elliot has long been the epitome of moustached manliness, notably as the enigmatic barfly in The Big Lebowski, but he reaches the heights of greatness through his willingness to let it cover a large fraction of his slender face.

1. Tom Selleck

We’ve come a long way through the moustache hall of fame; however, in the words of Highlander, there can be only one; and that one is Tom Selleck. My love for Magnum P.I. is well documented, but Selleck deserves the top slot for the sheer staying power of his moustache. Moustache away!
